When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Senegal, they said:

"Senegal is a culturally diverse country with a rich history and vibrant culture. It is important to learn about the local customs and traditions before moving to Senegal. Expats should also be aware of the language barrier, as French is the official language of Senegal. It is also important to research the cost of living in Senegal, as prices can vary significantly depending on the city and region. Additionally, expats should be aware of the climate in Senegal, as it can be hot and humid in the summer months. Finally, expats should make sure to obtain the necessary visas and permits before moving to Senegal," remarked one expat in Senegal.

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One way to find a place to live in Senegal is to search online for rental listings. Websites such as Expat.com, EasyExpat.com, and Senegal-Property.com offer listings of apartments, houses, and other types of rental properties in Senegal. Additionally, you can search for rental listings on classifieds websites such as Craigslist and OLX. You can also contact local real estate agents to help you find a place to live in Senegal. Finally, you can ask friends and family who live in Senegal for recommendations," said one expat in Senegal.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Senegal?

"Expat homes and apartments in Senegal tend to be modern and comfortable, with air conditioning, internet access, and other amenities. Many expats choose to live in gated communities, which offer a greater sense of security and privacy. Expat homes and apartments often have balconies or terraces, allowing for outdoor living and entertaining. Expats may also choose to live in villas, which offer more space and privacy," said one expat in Senegal.

What is the average cost of housing in Senegal?

If you are thinking about moving to Senegal, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Senegal varies depending on the location and type of accommodation. Generally, renting an apartment in a city center can cost anywhere from $200 to $500 per month, while renting a house in a rural area can cost around $100 to $200 per month. Prices for buying property in Senegal can range from $50,000 to $500,000 depending on the size and location," remarked one expat in Senegal.

Should I buy or rent a home in Senegal?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Senegal, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Senegal, it is important to consider the cost of living, the availability of housing, and the local economy. Buying a home in Senegal can be a great investment, as property values tend to appreciate over time. However, it is important to consider the cost of purchasing a home, including the cost of a down payment, closing costs, and any necessary repairs or renovations. Renting a home in Senegal can be a more affordable option, as it does not require a large upfront investment. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility, as it allows you to move more easily if your circumstances change. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Senegal should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," remarked one expat who made the move to Senegal.

What should I pack when moving to Senegal?

We asked people living in Senegal to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Senegal, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that is appropriate for the hot and humid climate. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Bring comfortable shoes for walking and exploring. Pack a few items of formal clothing for special occasions. Bring any necessary medications and a first aid kit. Bring a few items of sentimental value to make your new home feel more familiar. Don't forget to bring a few items to help you learn the local language," said one expat in Senegal.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Senegal?

We asked people in Senegal if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Senegal. It is considered impolite to show public displays of affection, so it is best to avoid kissing or hugging in public. It is also important to dress modestly, as revealing clothing is considered inappropriate. It is also important to be aware of the local religious customs and to be respectful of religious sites. It is also important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local customs regarding gift-giving and to avoid giving gifts that are too expensive or extravagant," said one expat in Senegal.

"Of course! I actually began to eat from the communal bowl with the wrong hand one night. Everyone else went hungry that night," remarked one expat who made the move to Thies.

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Senegal, they replied:

Foreign residents in Senegal have access to the public healthcare system, although they may need to pay for some services. Expats in Senegal typically use the public healthcare system for basic medical services, such as primary care and preventive care. However, they may opt to use private healthcare services for more specialized medical care," stated one expat who made the move to Senegal.

What are medical services in Senegal like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Senegal, they replied:

"Senegal has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country also has a number of private hospitals and clinics that offer more specialized care. The quality of medical care in Senegal varies depending on the facility, but overall it is considered to be of a good standard.
