What do I need to know before moving to Zambia?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Zambia, they said:

"Expats should be aware that Zambia is a developing country and that the infrastructure and services may not be as advanced as in other countries. It is important to research the cost of living in Zambia before moving, as prices can vary significantly depending on the area. Expats should also be aware that English is the official language of Zambia, but many locals also speak Bemba, Nyanja, and Tonga. It is also important to research the local laws and customs before moving to Zambia, as these can vary significantly from other countries. Finally, expats should be aware that the healthcare system in Zambia is not as advanced as in other countries, so it is important to have adequate health insurance before moving," remarked one expat in Zambia.

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

Should I buy or rent a home in Zambia?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Zambia, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Zambia, it is important to consider your financial situation, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Buying a home can be a great investment, as it can provide you with a stable place to live and the potential for appreciation in value. However, it also requires a large upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs. Renting a home can be a more affordable option, as it requires less of an upfront investment and no maintenance costs. However, it does not provide the same potential for appreciation in value. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Zambia should be based on your individual needs and preferences," explained one expat living in Zambia.

What should I pack when moving to Zambia?

"When moving to Zambia, it is important to pack clothing suitable for the climate. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are best for the hot and humid weather. It is also important to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent. Additionally, it is recommended to bring a first aid kit, a flashlight, and a multi-purpose tool. It is also a good idea to bring a few items to make your new home feel more comfortable, such as pictures, books, and other personal items. Finally, it is important to bring any necessary documents, such as a passport, visa, and other important paperwork," said one expat who made the move to Zambia.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Zambia?

We asked people in Zambia if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In Zambia, it is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to use an open hand when gesturing. It is also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Avoid discussing politics or religion in public, as these topics can be sensitive. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to be respectful when speaking to locals," remarked one expat who made the move to Zambia.

How are healthcare services Zambia?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Zambia, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Zambia are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all citizens of Zambia. The quality of public healthcare varies depending on the region, but generally it is considered to be of a lower standard than private healthcare. Foreign residents do have access to the public healthcare system, but they may be required to pay for some services. Expats in Zambia generally use the private healthcare system, as it is more reliable and of a higher quality than the public system," remarked one expat in Zambia.

What are medical services in Zambia like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Zambia, they replied:

"Zambia has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country has a network of health centers and hospitals that offer primary care services such as immunizations, antenatal care, and family planning. Zambia also has a number of private health facilities that provide more specialized services such as surgery, radiology, and laboratory services. The country has a shortage of medical personnel, however, and many of the health centers and hospitals are understaffed and lack adequate resources. Despite these challenges, the government is working to improve access to healthcare and has implemented a number of initiatives to increase the availability of medical services," said one expat.
