Moving to Kenya

"Was born here so I am somewhat familiar with the areas, but after so many years away, use someone local that you trust. Keep in mind "Help" is not free in Kenya, even when people are supposed to do their job," said one expat in Nairobi, the whole country.

"It's a spacious l 2 bedroom comfortably furnished apartment. This is the standard for most expats," commented one expat who made the move to Mombasa.

"Higher, we paid $560 for a townhouse in a small town in Norway and now we pay 900 for an apt simply because of the area and locals jack up the price for foreigners," explained one expat living in Nairobi, the whole country, Kenya.

"Housing is around 30/35 thousand Kenyan shillings. It is the same or even lower than in my host country," said one expat in Mombasa.

"Buying a home in Kenya can be a great investment, as property values are likely to appreciate over time. However, it is important to consider the costs associated with buying a home, such as the down payment, closing costs, and ongoing maintenance. Renting a home in Kenya can be a more affordable option, as it requires less upfront costs and allows for more flexibility in terms of location and length of stay. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Kenya should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," explained one expat living in Kenya.

"When moving to Kenya, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that is appropriate for the warm climate. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Bring a mosquito net and insect repellent to protect yourself from insect-borne illnesses. Bring a first-aid kit with basic medical supplies. Pack a few items of clothing that are appropriate for more formal occasions, such as a dinner or a business meeting. Bring a few books or magazines to help you pass the time. Finally, make sure to bring any necessary documents, such as your passport and visa," replied a member in Kenya.

"Food stuffs, but that is unrealistic since you can adjust quickly to local foods," commented one expat who made the move to Nairobi, the whole country.

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Kenya. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to use an open hand when gesturing. It is also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Avoid discussing politics or religion in public, as these topics can be sensitive. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to be respectful when speaking to locals," remarked one expat in Kenya.

"Yes. A very friendly person taught me the local custom of calling a person by his surname instead of by his first name as a form of acknowledging friendship and honoring his bloodline. When she then called a person by his first name I asked why without thinking. I did not realise that I was putting her in a very bad spot as it blatantly highlighted a sensitive political situation," said one expat in Nairobi.

"Kenya is an attractive destination for expats due to its diverse culture, vibrant cities, and stunning natural beauty. The country offers a wide range of activities and attractions, from safaris and beach holidays to mountain climbing and cultural experiences. The cost of living is relatively low compared to other countries in the region, making it an attractive option for those looking to stretch their budget. Additionally, Kenya is a great place to work, with a growing economy and a wide range of job opportunities. The country also offers excellent healthcare and education systems, making it an ideal place to raise a family," said one expat.

"Healthcare services in Kenya are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all Kenyan citizens. The quality of public healthcare varies depending on the region, but generally it is considered to be of a lower standard than private healthcare. Foreign residents in Kenya have access to the public healthcare system, but they may be required to pay a fee. Expats in Kenya typically use private healthcare services, as they are more reliable and of a higher quality. However, some expats may choose to use the public healthcare system if they are unable to afford private healthcare," remarked one expat in Kenya.
