People love the warm weather, the beautiful beaches, the diverse culture, and the abundance of outdoor activities. The cost of living in California is higher than the national average, with the median home price in the state being around $550,000. The approximate population of California is 39.5 million, and the largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, and Fresno. The cons of living in California include the high cost of living, the traffic congestion, and the high taxes. Additionally, the state is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, wildfires, and mudslides.

Is the cost of living in California high?

We asked people about the cost of living in California, they wrote:

"The cost of living in California can vary greatly depending on the region. Generally speaking, the state tends to be significantly more expensive if compared to the rest of the United States; however, those living in certain rural or suburban areas can sometimes find living costs that are more reasonable. The rental price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in California will usually cost between $1,200 - $3,000 a month while a nice 2 bedroom apartment may cost between $1,800 - 4,500. Eating dinner at a moderately priced restaurant will usually cost approximately $50 - $100 per meal," said one expat living in California.

What type of recreational facilities are in California?

When we asked people living in California about recreational activities, they mentioned:

"In California, residents can enjoy a variety of recreational facilities, such as beaches, parks, trails, and golf courses. There are also many museums, art galleries, and theaters for those who prefer cultural activities. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, there are plenty of opportunities for camping, fishing, and boating. California also has a wide variety of sports facilities, including basketball courts, tennis courts, and swimming pools. For those who prefer more extreme activities, there are plenty of opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking," remarked one expat in California.

What is the weather like in California?

"The weather in California is generally mild and sunny. During the summer months, temperatures can reach the high 80s and low 90s, while in the winter months temperatures can dip into the 40s and 50s. Rainfall is generally light throughout the year, with the most rain occurring in the winter months," commented one expat who moved to California.

Are there good restaurants in California?

"In California, one of the most popular restaurants is In-N-Out Burger. Founded in 1948, this fast-food chain is known for its delicious burgers, fries, and shakes. Another favorite is The French Laundry, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Yountville. The restaurant is known for its innovative and creative dishes, as well as its impeccable service. For seafood lovers, there is The Fish Market in San Diego. This restaurant is known for its fresh seafood, as well as its waterfront views. Finally, for a unique dining experience, there is The Melting Pot in San Francisco. This fondue restaurant offers a variety of cheese, chocolate, and broth fondues, as well as a selection of meats and vegetables," mentioned an expat living in California.

Where will I buy groceries and do other shopping in California?

"People living in California typically buy groceries from supermarkets, such as Safeway, Vons, and Trader Joe's. They also shop at local farmers markets, health food stores, and specialty stores. Additionally, many people in California shop online for groceries and other items," remarked one expat living in California.

What are the visa & residency requirements in California?

"In order to obtain a visa for California, applicants must submit a completed visa application to the United States Department of State. Other requirements may include attaching proof of identity, paying the visa fee, and submitting a valid passport. After the visa application has been processed, the applicant's visa permission will be indicated on the passport. The process of obtaining residency in California is more complex. The applicant must fulfill several requirements such as establishing residence in California and filing the necessary paperwork. In addition, the applicant may need to provide proof of sufficient funds and prove that they are able to support themselves financially. They may also need to demonstrate good moral character and have a valid passport to reside in the United States. The process is usually completed upon review of the application and when the agreement is signed," remarked one expat in California.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in California?

"Healthcare and health insurance in California can be expensive. The cost of health insurance premiums can vary depending on the type of plan and the provider. Additionally, the cost of healthcare services can be high, especially for those without insurance. Many people in California rely on government programs such as Medi-Cal and Covered California to help cover the cost of healthcare and health insurance," wrote one expat living in California.
