The cost of living in Alabama is generally lower than the national average, with the median home price being around $150,000. The approximate population of Alabama is 4.9 million, and the largest cities are Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa. The cons of living in Alabama include the high crime rate in some areas, the lack of public transportation, and the limited job opportunities. Additionally, Alabama has some of the lowest wages in the country, and the state has been slow to adopt progressive policies.

Is the cost of living in Alabama high?

We asked people about the cost of living in Alabama, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Alabama is comparably lower than the national average. However, this varies with different areas, because each city and town in the state will have a different cost of living associated with it. The average rental price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Alabama is around $600 - $650 per month. The average rental price for a nice 2 bedroom apartment in Alabama is around $750 - $850 per month. Eating dinner at a moderately priced restaurant costs around $12 - $20 per person," said one expat.

What type of recreational facilities are in Alabama?

When we asked people living in Alabama about recreational activities, they mentioned:

"In Alabama, residents can enjoy a variety of recreational facilities, such as parks, golf courses, beaches, lakes, and trails. Parks offer a variety of activities, such as playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports fields. Golf courses provide a great way to enjoy the outdoors and practice your swing. Beaches along the Gulf Coast provide a great way to relax and soak up the sun. Lakes provide a great way to fish, boat, and swim. Trails offer a great way to explore the outdoors and get some exercise," remarked one expat in Alabama.

What is the weather like in Alabama?

"The weather in Alabama is typically warm and humid, with hot summers and mild winters. Rainfall is abundant throughout the year, with the highest amounts occurring in the summer months. The state is also prone to severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes," remarked one expat in Alabama.

Are there good restaurants in Alabama?

"One of Alabama's favorite restaurants is Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Decatur. Founded in 1925, Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q is known for its smoked meats, including its signature white sauce. The restaurant also serves up classic Southern sides like macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and fried okra. Another popular restaurant in Alabama is The Bright Star in Bessemer. The Bright Star has been serving up Greek-style seafood since 1907. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood dishes, including its signature Greek-style fried shrimp. Finally, Saw's Soul Kitchen in Birmingham is a favorite among locals. The restaurant serves up classic Southern comfort food, including fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens. The restaurant also offers a variety of craft beers and cocktails," said one expat living in Alabama.

Where will I buy groceries and do other shopping in Alabama?

"People living in Alabama typically buy groceries and do other shopping at supermarkets, convenience stores, department stores, and specialty stores. Many people also shop online for groceries and other items. Additionally, farmers markets and roadside stands are popular places to buy fresh produce and other items," said one expat.

What are the visa & residency requirements in Alabama?

"Applying for a visa to work, study, or travel to Alabama involves submitting a visa petition to the United States embassy or consulate, paying application fees and then attending an interview with consulate officials. After the petition is approved, the individual will receive a visa, which permits entry into the United States. To apply for residency in Alabama, international non-citizens must first establish their eligibility to apply. This often involves filling in an application, paying the relevant fees, submitting evidence of relationship or employment documents and an affidavit of support from a person already legally present in Alabama. Non-citizens must also pass a security and background check as well as an interview with an officer from the Department of Homeland Security. Once these requirements are met, the person can be granted a green card, which confers legal permanent residence status in the United States," wrote one expat living in Alabama.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Alabama?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Alabama can be expensive. The cost of healthcare in Alabama is higher than the national average, and the cost of health insurance is also higher than the national average. Additionally, Alabama has some of the highest out-of-pocket costs for healthcare in the country. This means that even with health insurance, individuals in Alabama may still have to pay a significant amount for their healthcare," said an expat in Alabama.
