The cons of living in Puerto Rico include the high cost of living in some areas, the lack of job opportunities, and the high crime rate. We asked people about the cost of living in Puerto Rico, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Puerto Rico is generally considered to be lower than in the United States. Rent for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Puerto Rico is typically around $700 USD per month, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment is usually around $900 USD per month. Eating dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in Puerto Rico can cost around $15 USD per person," said one expat.

What type of recreational facilities are in Puerto Rico?

When we asked people living in Puerto Rico about recreational activities, they mentioned:

"Puerto Rico offers a variety of recreational facilities for its residents to enjoy. From beaches and parks to museums and historical sites, there is something for everyone. Residents can take advantage of the many outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and kayaking. There are also plenty of water sports to enjoy, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, Puerto Rico also offers a variety of cultural attractions, including art galleries, theaters, and music venues. Additionally, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and nightlife spots to explore," commented one expat living in Puerto Rico.

What is the weather like in Puerto Rico?

"The weather in Puerto Rico is typically warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit throughout the year. The island experiences two distinct seasons: a wet season from May to November and a dry season from December to April. Puerto Rico is also prone to tropical storms and hurricanes, especially during the wet season," mentioned an expat living in Puerto Rico.

Are there good restaurants in Puerto Rico?

"One of Puerto Rico's most beloved restaurants is La Casita Blanca, located in the heart of Old San Juan. This family-run restaurant has been serving up traditional Puerto Rican cuisine since the 1940s, and is known for its delicious mofongo, a dish made with mashed plantains and pork cracklings. La Casita Blanca is also known for its friendly service and cozy atmosphere. Another popular restaurant in Puerto Rico is El Jibarito, located in the city of Ponce. This restaurant specializes in traditional Puerto Rican dishes, such as mofongo, asopao, and pasteles. El Jibarito is also known for its generous portions and reasonable prices. For a more upscale dining experience, many people in Puerto Rico turn to Pikayo, located in the Condado area of San Juan. This restaurant is known for its modern take on traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, as well as its stunning views of the ocean. Pikayo is also known for its excellent service and creative cocktails," mentioned an expat living in Puerto Rico.

Where will I buy groceries and do other shopping in Puerto Rico?

"People living in Puerto Rico typically buy groceries and do other shopping at supermarkets, convenience stores, and local markets. Many people also shop at department stores, specialty stores, and online retailers. Additionally, there are many street vendors and farmers markets where people can purchase fresh produce and other items," mentioned an expat living in Puerto Rico.

What are the visa & residency requirements in Puerto Rico?

"In order to visit Puerto Rico, foreign nationals must obtain a visa from the United States Department of State. The process of applying for a visa involves submitting an application form, providing supporting documents, and attending an interview at the US Embassy or Consulate. In order to become a resident of Puerto Rico, foreign nationals must obtain a Certificate of Residency from the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury. The process of applying for residency involves submitting an application form, providing supporting documents, and attending an interview at the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury," remarked one expat in Puerto Rico.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Puerto Rico?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Puerto Rico can be expensive. The cost of healthcare services is generally higher than in the mainland United States, and health insurance premiums can be costly. Additionally, many Puerto Ricans are uninsured due to the high cost of health insurance, leaving them to pay out-of-pocket for medical services. The government of Puerto Rico has implemented several programs to help reduce the cost of healthcare and health insurance, but the cost remains a challenge for many Puerto Ricans," remarked one expat in Puerto Rico.
