"Illinois offers a wide range of healthcare services, including primary care, specialty care, mental health services, and preventive care. The state is home to some of the best hospitals and medical facilities in the country, including the University of Chicago Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Rush University Medical Center. These hospitals offer a variety of services, from emergency care to complex surgeries. In addition, Illinois has a number of community health centers that provide primary care and preventive services to underserved populations. These centers are located throughout the state, with the majority located in the Chicago area," said one expat.

The operator will ask for your location and the nature of the emergency. They will then dispatch an ambulance to your location. Will I need to travel to see a specialist?
"Illinois has many cities and areas that boast excellent medical specialist options. In the Chicago area, popular options include hospitals like Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the University of Chicago Medical Center. In the greater Chicago suburbs and the North Shore, institutions such as NorthShore University HealthSystem and Rush University Medical Center offer patients access to top-notch specialists. Further downstate, cities such as Carbondale and Springfield provide access to excellent medical specialists at facilities such as Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and Memorial Medical Center. Regardless of where you are in Illinois, there is sure to be a selection of experienced medical specialists who can provide the care you need," said one expat living in Illinois.
Are common prescription medications available in Illinois?
"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Illinois. Pharmacies in the state are able to fill prescriptions for a variety of medications, including antibiotics, pain relievers, antidepressants, and other medications used to treat a variety of conditions. In addition, many pharmacies in Illinois offer over-the-counter medications, such as cold and flu remedies, vitamins, and other health-related products," said one expat.

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Illinois, you will have access to public healthcare. The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services provides a variety of health care services to eligible individuals, including Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and All Kids. These programs provide access to health care services such as doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, vision care, and mental health services. The quality of care provided by these programs is generally good, and the cost of care is usually lower than private insurance," commented one expat living in Illinois.
What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

"My experiences with the local healthcare system in Illinois during the pandemic have been mostly positive. I have been able to access telehealth services with ease, and my doctor's office has been very accommodating in providing virtual appointments. I have also been able to get tested for COVID-19 quickly and easily, with results coming back within a few days. The healthcare system in Illinois has been very responsive to the needs of the community during this difficult time," mentioned one expat in Illinois.
