When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Mississippi, they replied:

"Mississippi offers a wide range of healthcare services, including primary care, specialty care, mental health services, and preventive care. The state is home to a number of hospitals and medical facilities, including the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, which is the state's only academic medical center. Other major hospitals in the state include Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Merit Health Central in Jackson, and Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Mississippi also has a number of rural health clinics and community health centers that provide care to underserved populations," remarked one expat living in Mississippi.

What are medical services in Mississippi like?

"Mississippi offers a wide range of medical services to its residents. The state has a network of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities that provide quality care to patients. Mississippi also has a number of specialized medical centers that offer specialized care for specific conditions. Additionally, the state has a number of community health centers that provide primary care services to those who may not have access to traditional healthcare. Mississippi also has a number of mental health and substance abuse treatment centers that provide support and treatment to those struggling with addiction and mental health issues," said one expat living in Mississippi.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Mississippi?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Mississippi can be expensive. The cost of healthcare in Mississippi is higher than the national average, and the cost of health insurance is also higher than the national average. Additionally, Mississippi has some of the highest rates of uninsured people in the country, which can lead to higher costs for those who do have health insurance," wrote an expat living in Mississippi.

What are emergency services like in Mississippi?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Mississippi wrote:

"In Mississippi, emergency services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To call for an ambulance, you can dial 911 from any phone. The operator will ask for your location and the nature of the emergency, and will then dispatch an ambulance to your location," said an expat in Mississippi.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Mississippi's largest cities, Jackson and Biloxi, offer a wide variety of medical specialists. In Jackson, patients can find specialists in all major fields, including cardiology, dermatology and neurology. In Biloxi, there are specialists in areas such as pediatrics, oncology and urology. Additionally, Hattiesburg and Gulfport provide residents with access to medical expertise in psychiatry and endocrinology. Throughout Mississippi, smaller cities such as Oxford, Meridian and Natchez have many medical specialists focusing on family medicine and internal medicine, among others," remarked one expat in Mississippi.

Are common prescription medications available in Mississippi?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Mississippi. Pharmacies throughout the state carry a wide variety of medications, including those used to treat common conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and depression. Many pharmacies also offer generic versions of brand-name medications, which can be more affordable for patients. Additionally, many pharmacies offer free delivery services for those who are unable to pick up their medications in person," commented one expat living in Mississippi.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Mississippi?

"Medical facilities and health care in Mississippi are often lower quality than in other states. Many parts of the state still experience shortages of medical professionals and access to the latest advances in health care technology. Despite efforts to improve access to care, many Mississippi residents still struggle to secure quality medical care at an affordable price. Moreover, rural areas in particular may not have the resources necessary to adequately treat some medical conditions," remarked one expat living in Mississippi.

As a foreigner living in Mississippi, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Mississippi, you will have access to public healthcare. Mississippi has a Medicaid program that provides health care coverage to low-income individuals and families. The program covers a wide range of services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, and preventive care. The quality of care provided by the program varies depending on the provider, but overall it is considered to be of good quality," commented one expat who moved to Mississippi.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

"My experiences with the local healthcare system in Mississippi during the pandemic have been mostly positive. The healthcare providers in my area have been very responsive and accommodating to my needs, and I have been able to access the care I need in a timely manner. The healthcare system has also been proactive in providing information and resources to help me stay safe and healthy during this time. I am grateful for the care and support I have received from my local healthcare system during this difficult time," remarked one expat living in Mississippi.
