How are healthcare services Myanmar?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Myanmar, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Myanmar are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely underfunded and understaffed, resulting in a lack of quality care. The public healthcare system is also limited in its scope, with many services not available to the general public. Foreign residents have limited access to the public healthcare system, and most expats in Myanmar opt to use private healthcare services. Private healthcare services are generally of higher quality than public services, but they are also more expensive. Expats in Myanmar may also be able to access some public healthcare services, such as vaccinations, but they are not eligible for the same level of care as citizens," remarked one expat in Myanmar.

What are medical services in Myanmar like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Myanmar, they replied:

"Myanmar has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. However, the quality of care is often inadequate due to a lack of resources and trained personnel. Private health care is available in the country, but it is expensive and often out of reach for many people. The government has been working to improve the quality of medical services in the country, but progress has been slow. In rural areas, access to medical care is often limited and the quality of care is often lower than in urban areas," wrote one expat.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Myanmar?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Myanmar can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the government's health insurance scheme. Private health insurance is available, but it can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, the quality of healthcare in Myanmar is not always up to international standards, and medical facilities may be limited in some areas. As a result, many people in Myanmar are unable to access the healthcare they need," mentioned one expat in Myanmar.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, is home to a wide variety of medical specialists, including general practitioners, specialists in internal medicine, cardiologists, neurologists, and orthopedic surgeons. Other cities with a good selection of medical specialists include Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Bago. In addition, the coastal city of Sittwe has a number of specialists in tropical medicine, while the city of Taunggyi is known for its selection of pediatricians. Finally, the city of Myitkyina in Kachin State is home to a number of specialists in traditional medicine," said an expat in Myanmar.

Are common prescription medications available in Myanmar?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Myanmar. However, the availability of certain medications may vary depending on the region. Generally, most medications are available in major cities, while some may be more difficult to find in rural areas. Additionally, some medications may be more expensive in Myanmar than in other countries," mentioned one expat in Myanmar.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Myanmar?

"Medical facilities and medical care in Myanmar are generally of a lower standard than in many other countries. The quality of care varies greatly depending on the region and the availability of resources. In rural areas, access to medical care is often limited and the quality of care is often inadequate. In urban areas, medical care is more accessible, but the quality of care is still lower than in many other countries. In general, the availability of specialized medical care is limited and the cost of medical care is often prohibitively expensive," wrote an expat living in Myanmar.

As a foreigner living in Myanmar, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Foreigners living in Myanmar do have access to public healthcare, although the quality of care may vary. Generally, public healthcare facilities are underfunded and lack modern equipment and medicines. Additionally, the language barrier can be an issue, as many healthcare professionals may not speak English. However, there are some private hospitals and clinics that offer better quality care and services," said an expat in Myanmar.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Myanmar if they have access to public healthcare in Myanmar. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Myanmar's healthcare system has been severely impacted by the pandemic. The country has seen a dramatic increase in the number of cases, with limited resources to respond. Healthcare workers have been stretched thin, with many working long hours and facing shortages of protective equipment. The government has implemented a number of measures to try to contain the spread of the virus, including travel restrictions, social distancing, and the closure of schools and businesses. However, the country's healthcare system is still struggling to cope with the influx of patients. Many hospitals are overcrowded and lack the necessary resources to provide adequate care. In addition, access to healthcare is limited in rural areas, where many people lack access to basic medical services," commented one expat living in Myanmar.

What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Myanmar?

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Myanmar about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said:

"It is important to research the healthcare system in Myanmar before having a baby. Make sure to find a reliable doctor or midwife who is experienced in delivering babies in Myanmar. It is also important to be aware of the cultural norms and expectations surrounding childbirth in Myanmar. Additionally, it is important to be prepared for the cost of having a baby in Myanmar, as medical costs can be high. Finally, it is important to build a support network of family and friends who can provide assistance during the pregnancy and after the baby is born," remarked one in Myanmar.

Are healthcare services good in Myanmar?

We asked people if they have access to good medical care in Myanmar. They wrote:

"Healthcare services in Myanmar are generally limited and of low quality. Access to healthcare is often difficult for many people, particularly those living in rural areas. The country has a shortage of qualified medical personnel, and the majority of healthcare facilities are poorly equipped and lack basic medical supplies. In addition, the cost of healthcare is often prohibitively expensive for many people, making it difficult for them to access the care they need. Despite these challenges, the government is making efforts to improve healthcare services in the country, including increasing access to healthcare and improving the quality of care," said one person in Myanmar.
