When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Macau, they replied:

"Macau has a comprehensive healthcare system that provides a wide range of services to its citizens and foreign residents. The public healthcare system is managed by the Health Bureau of Macau and is funded by the government. The quality of public healthcare is generally good, with a wide range of services available, including primary care, specialist care, and hospital services. Foreign residents have access to the public healthcare system, although they may need to pay a fee for some services. Expats in Macau can use the public healthcare system, but they may need to pay a fee for some services. Expats can also access private healthcare services, which are generally of a higher quality than the public system," commented one expat who moved to Macau.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Macau is home to a wide variety of medical specialists, with the highest concentration of specialists located in the city centre. The neighbourhoods of Taipa and Coloane also have a good selection of medical specialists, as well as the Cotai Strip, which is home to several large hospitals and medical centres. Additionally, the Macau International Airport has a number of medical facilities, including a 24-hour emergency clinic," said one expat.

Are common prescription medications available in Macau?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Macau. Most pharmacies in Macau carry a wide range of prescription medications, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other medications used to treat common illnesses. In addition, many pharmacies also offer over-the-counter medications, such as pain relievers, cold and flu remedies, and vitamins. Some pharmacies also offer specialized medications, such as those used to treat cancer or HIV/AIDS," wrote one expat.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Macau?

"Medical facilities and medical care in Macau are of a high standard. The city has a number of well-equipped hospitals and clinics, staffed by experienced and qualified medical professionals. Macau also has a number of specialist medical centers, offering a range of treatments and services. The government of Macau is committed to providing quality healthcare to its citizens, and has invested heavily in the healthcare sector. Macau also has a number of private medical facilities, offering a range of services and treatments," said one expat living in Macau.

As a foreigner living in Macau, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Macau, you will have access to public healthcare. Macau's public healthcare system is comprehensive and provides a wide range of services, including primary care, specialist care, hospital care, and preventive health services. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is free for all residents, including foreigners. The quality of care is generally good, and the staff are friendly and professional," commented one expat living in Macau.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on the local healthcare system in Macau. The government has implemented a range of measures to ensure the safety of the public, including the closure of borders, the suspension of non-essential services, and the introduction of strict quarantine protocols. The healthcare system has also been stretched to its limits, with hospitals and clinics facing a surge in demand for services. Despite the challenges, the healthcare system has responded quickly and effectively, providing timely and quality care to those in need. The government has also provided financial support to healthcare providers to ensure they can continue to provide essential services," remarked one expat living in Macau.

What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Macau?

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Macau about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said:

"It is important to research the healthcare system in Macau before having a baby. Make sure to find a doctor or midwife who speaks your language and is familiar with the local healthcare system. Additionally, it is important to familiarize yourself with the local laws and regulations regarding childbirth and parenting. It is also a good idea to join a local expat group or forum to connect with other expats who have had babies in Macau and can provide advice and support. Finally, make sure to take time to relax and enjoy the experience of having a baby in Macau," remarked one expat in Macau.

Are healthcare services good in Macau?
