Pros and Cons of Living in Myanmar

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Last updated on Jan 08, 2024

Summary: The pros of living in Myanmar include the country's rich culture and history, its diverse landscape, and its friendly people. Additionally, the cost of living is relatively low, making it an attractive destination for those looking to stretch their budget. On the other hand, the country is still in the process of transitioning to a more democratic government, and there are still some restrictions on freedom of speech and press. Additionally, infrastructure is still developing, and access to modern amenities may be limited in some areas.

What are the pros and cons of living in Myanmar?

Expats, digital nomads and retirees living in Myanmar responded:

"Expats and digital nomads living in Myanmar often appreciate the country's rich culture and friendly people. They also enjoy the low cost of living, which allows them to stretch their budget further. On the other hand, they may find the lack of reliable internet access and infrastructure to be a challenge. Additionally, the language barrier can be difficult to overcome, as English is not widely spoken," wrote one expat in Myanmar.

What do expats in Myanmar appreciate most about the local culture?

"Expats in Myanmar appreciate the warmth and hospitality of the local people, the vibrant culture and traditions, the stunning natural beauty of the country, and the delicious local cuisine. They also enjoy the relaxed pace of life and the opportunity to explore the many ancient temples and monuments. Additionally, expats appreciate the low cost of living and the fact that Myanmar is still relatively untouched by mass tourism," remarked one in Myanmar.

What do expats find most challenging?

"Expats in Myanmar often find the local culture to be quite different from what they are used to. Many find the language barrier to be a challenge, as English is not widely spoken. Additionally, the local customs and etiquette can be difficult to navigate, as they are quite different from those of other countries. Expats may also find the local infrastructure to be lacking, as many services and amenities are not as readily available as they are in other countries. Finally, the political situation in Myanmar can be a source of stress for expats, as the country is still in the process of transitioning to a more democratic system," said one person in Myanmar.
