Dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in Tanzania can cost anywhere from $10 to $20 per person.

We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in Tanzania, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Tanzania is generally considered to be quite affordable. Basic necessities such as food, transportation, and housing are relatively inexpensive compared to other countries. However, the cost of living can vary depending on the city and lifestyle. For example, living in the capital city of Dar es Salaam is more expensive than living in smaller cities or rural areas. Additionally, the cost of imported goods and services can be higher than in other countries," remarked one expat in Tanzania.

"Living in Tanzania can be significantly cheaper than living in the United States. The cost of living in Tanzania is much lower than in the United States, with basic necessities such as food, housing, and transportation costing significantly less. Additionally, the cost of entertainment and leisure activities is also much lower in Tanzania than in the United States. As a result, living in Tanzania can be a great way to save money compared to living in the United States," wrote a person living in Tanzania.

What is the average cost of housing in Tanzania?

If you are thinking about moving to Tanzania, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Tanzania varies greatly depending on the location and type of housing. Generally, housing in urban areas tends to be more expensive than in rural areas. Prices for housing can range from very affordable to quite expensive, depending on the size and amenities of the property," said one expat in Tanzania.

"Cheaper or about the same. For TX about the same, for California cheaper. House rent can cost around - 500 - 900 usd- this may or may not include security, water or electricity," remarked one in Arusha.

"The rental price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Tanzania can vary depending on the location and amenities, but generally ranges from around $400 to $800 per month. For a nice 2 bedroom apartment, the rental price can range from around $600 to $1,200 per month," mentioned one expat in Tanzania.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Tanzania what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In Tanzania, rental properties typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, and washing machine. Other common appliances may include a microwave, dishwasher, and air conditioning unit. Depending on the property, additional amenities such as a water heater, water filter, and security system may also be included," commented one expat living in Tanzania.
