We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in the United States, they wrote:

"The cost of living in the United States varies depending on the city and state you live in. In general, living costs in the US are usually high and rising. Rent, transportation, and food expenses tend to make up the largest portion of monthly expenses in most parts of the country. Healthcare in the US can also be expensive, particularly if you do not have access to employer-sponsored insurance. Will I save money living in the United States?

"Living in the United States may not necessarily save you money compared to living elsewhere due to the high cost of living in many parts of the country. However, the cost of living varies greatly from state to state and depending on location, some areas may offer a more economical lifestyle than others. Additionally, the United States offers various government programs and benefits that can help offset some of the costs associated with living in the country," said one person in United States.

What is the average cost of housing in the United States?

If you are thinking about moving to the United States, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in the United States is generally considered to be quite high. On a national level, housing costs have been steadily increasing over the past few decades and many people struggle to afford housing they need," said one expat in United States.

"An average 3 Bedroomed apartment is between $900-$1300 per month. Overall it is the same rent as in the UK, only with loads of facilities," wrote a person living in Fort Lauderdale.

What are typical rental prices for expats in the United States?

"For $1000 or less you may find a nice sor small cottage. There are 1 and even 2 bedrooms at that price an array of problems are likely. My 1BR is cute and has a wonderful patio and view. The area is safe and quiet but the kitchen and bathroom are too small. It is a bargain at $1300. The 2BR upstairs $2300. Between $1500 and and $2000 your studio should be lovely but a nice 1BR at that price will require some searching. If you have $3000 it should not be too hard to find whatever you want. The only thing I can say about $10,000 is there are extravagant rentals at that price. Personally I'd be scared of neighbors who could afford that," said one expat living in Christiansted.

"The rental price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in the United States will vary depending on location, size, and amenities. In general, renters should expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 per month for a nice 1 bedroom apartment. For a nice 2 bedroom apartment, the prices can be considerably higher, ranging between $1,400 and $3,000 per month," mentioned one expat in United States.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in the United States what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"We nearly always have stove, fridge, and AC. But is there a generator? A cistern? Any alternative form of energy? These are important questions in an area where there are frequent power outages even when there is no storm," remarked one expat in Christiansted.

"Renting a home in the United States typically includes appliances such as a refrigerator, oven or stove, dishwasher, garbage disposal, washer, and dryer. Some homes may also come with additional features such as a microwave, air conditioning, or if the property is located in a warm climate, a pool or hot tub," remarked one expat living in United States.
