Summary: The cost of living in Canada varies depending on the city and province. Generally, the cost of living is higher in the larger cities such as Toronto and Vancouver. A nice 1 bedroom apartment in Canada can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 USD per month, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 USD per month. The cost of dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in Canada is usually around $20 USD per person.

"The cost of living in Canada can vary greatly depending on which region and city you choose to live in. Generally speaking, larger metropolitan areas have a higher cost of living than those in rural areas. However, Canada has a generally high standard of living, with quality housing, education, health care, and other services that are relatively affordable. For example, groceries, especially fresh produce, are generally reasonably priced, as are basic utilities such as electricity and natural gas. Public transportation is also relatively inexpensive in many large cities, making it a great choice for cost-saving," said one expat in Canada.

Will I save money living in Canada?

"Living in Canada can be more cost-effective compared to living in the United States in many ways. Canada has more affordable and publicly funded health care options, and its homeownership market is generally more affordable than in the US. Canadians also typically have access to more generous government programs, such as subsidized childcare, as well as public transportation, which can help save money on transportation costs. Additionally, the cost of living in Canada is generally lower than in the US, including groceries, utilities, and clothing, which can all contribute to reduced costs for everyday expenses," explained one expat.

What is the average cost of housing in Canada?

If you are thinking about moving to Canada, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"I am bewildered to hear of average housing in Montreal is around CAN $226,000. I lived in Montreal for 23 years, I am visiting frequently, I am planning to return soon, and I can confirm that you will not find any decent housing within 10 miles of the city center for less than $500,000," said one expat in Canada.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Canada what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Many rental properties in Canada come with basic appliances such as fridge, oven, stove and dishwasher. Often, landlords may also provide an air conditioning unit, washer and dryer, and a microwave. In some cases, renters may also have access to additional amenities such as a pool, patio, or balcony. Landlords may also include furniture such as a dining room table and chairs, sofa, bed, and entertainment unit," said one expat.
