Summary: The cost of living in Netherlands is generally considered to be quite high. A nice 1 bedroom apartment in the Netherlands can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 per month, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 per month. The cost of dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in the Netherlands can range from $15 to $30 per person.

Is the cost of living in The Netherlands high?

We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in The Netherlands, they wrote:

"The cost of living in the Netherlands is generally high, particularly in bigger cities like Amsterdam. Prices for basic necessities such as groceries and utilities are high, although wages tend to reflect this. Housing prices can be particularly expensive, but the country generally offers good value for money when it comes to transport, entertainment and restaurants. All in all, the Netherlands is a great country to live in despite its relatively high cost of living," remarked one expat in Netherlands.

Will I save money living in The Netherlands?

"Living in The Netherlands may be a less expensive option than typical living costs in the United States. Shopping and purchasing goods may cost less compared to the US, while taxes and utilities may be higher. Housing may be relatively more expensive, with rental prices slightly higher than in other European countries, but in many cases less than what would be found in the United States. Additionally, whilst health care may be more costly, the Netherlands provides universal health care for all citizens, making it a viable and less expensive option if health care is required," explained one expat living in Netherlands.

What is the average cost of housing in The Netherlands?

If you are thinking about moving to The Netherlands, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"Housing is cheaper than in large cities in the US, but is not cheap. In my experience, however, I am happy with what I pay. My apartment is small, but I live in one of the best neighborhoods in Rotterdam and I can afford to live alone. In NY, I had to share an apartment with someone I'd just met," remarked one in Rotterdam.

"The cost of housing in The Netherlands is generally quite high compared to other countries in Europe. The average monthly rent for a house in the Netherlands is usually between 800 and 1,600 Euros, depending on the area and size. In addition, it is usually necessary to make a deposit of at least 1-2 months rent and pay 3 to 4 months’ rent in advance," explained one expat.

What are typical rental prices for expats in The Netherlands?

"The average rental prices for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in The Netherlands range from an estimated €600 - €800 per month while the average rental prices of a nice 2 bedroom apartment in The Netherlands range from an estimated €750 - €1200 per month, depending on the location," said an expat in Netherlands.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in The Netherlands what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in The Netherlands usually come with a kitchen and a bathroom, including appliances such as a refrigerator, stove and oven, a washing machine and dryer, and possibly a dishwasher. Many rentals also include a vacuum cleaner, a mop, and other cleaning supplies and equipment. Furniture is not typically included, but outdoor furniture such as a balcony table and chairs might be provided," said one expat.
