Summary: An expat looking to buy a home in Ukraine should begin by researching the local real estate market and familiarizing themselves with the different types of properties available. They should also consider their budget and the type of amenities they are looking for in a home. When searching for a home to buy in Ukraine, expats should look for properties that are in good condition and have all the necessary amenities. These typically include a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedrooms, and a balcony or terrace. Other amenities may include a garden, garage, or storage space. Foreigners are allowed to own property in Ukraine, but there are some restrictions. For example, foreigners are not allowed to own agricultural land or land located in certain areas. It is also important to note that foreigners must obtain a permit from the Ukrainian government in order to purchase property.

How do I find a place to live in Ukraine?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One way to find a place to live in Ukraine is to search online for rental listings. Websites such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and Expedia offer a variety of rental options in Ukraine. Additionally, you can search for rental listings on local classifieds websites such as OLX and Avito. You can also contact local real estate agents who specialize in rental properties in Ukraine. Finally, you can ask friends and family who live in Ukraine for recommendations," said one expat who made the move to Ukraine.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Ukraine?

"One incredible option is to rent furniture from Home Essentials. If you look for an empty apartment, they can fill it with new items. Often the furniture in the homes is older and dated. Home Essentials (Kremenets & Kiev) is the only company that rents furniture in Ukraine," said one expat who made the move to Ukraine.

"Expat homes and apartments in Ukraine tend to be modern and comfortable, with a range of amenities to make life easier. Many expats choose to live in larger cities such as Kiev, where they can find a variety of housing options, from luxury apartments to more affordable options. Expat homes and apartments typically feature modern appliances, air conditioning, and internet access. Many also come with balconies or terraces, providing a great place to relax and enjoy the views," explained one foreigner living in Ukraine.

What is the average cost of housing in Ukraine?

If you are thinking about moving to Ukraine, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Ukraine varies depending on the location and type of property. Generally, the cost of renting an apartment in Ukraine is relatively affordable compared to other European countries. Prices for apartments in the capital city of Kyiv tend to be higher than in other cities, but still remain relatively low compared to other European capitals," said one expat who made the move to Ukraine.

Should I buy or rent a home in Ukraine?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Ukraine, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"We moved in with my Ukrainian mother-in-law, into her two-bed apartment. I invested time and money refurbishing the place. I agree to pay all the bills which, for the three of us, averages at 750 uah per month (£20.50). We are thinking about buying a house in one of the surrounding villages, which is a good option if you drive. You can pick up a 3 bed house relatively cheaply, and it's great to have your own "dacha" in the summer near a river of forest," said one person in Kharkov.

"Buying a home in Ukraine can be a great investment, as the country is experiencing a period of economic growth and stability. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in Ukraine, as well as the availability of financing options, before making a decision. Renting a home in Ukraine can be a more affordable option, as it allows you to enjoy the benefits of living in the country without the long-term commitment of buying a home. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility if you are unsure of how long you will be staying in Ukraine. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Ukraine should be based on your individual needs and preferences," said one expat who made the move to Ukraine.
