Additionally, you can contact local real estate agents who may be able to help you find a suitable place to live. It is also important to consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of amenities such as transportation, healthcare, and education. Finally, it is important to be aware of the cultural norms and customs of the area you are considering living in," said one person in Yemen.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Yemen?

"Expat homes and apartments in Yemen tend to be modern and comfortable, with amenities such as air conditioning, satellite television, and internet access. Many expats choose to live in compounds, which are gated communities that provide additional security and privacy. These compounds often have shared amenities such as swimming pools, gyms, and playgrounds. Expats may also choose to live in villas, which are larger homes with private gardens and outdoor spaces," remarked one member in Yemen.

What is the average cost of housing in Yemen?

If you are thinking about moving to Yemen, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Yemen is generally quite low, with many basic dwellings costing very little. However, the cost of housing can vary greatly depending on the location and quality of the dwelling. In the capital city of Sana'a, for example, the cost of housing is significantly higher than in other parts of the country," said one person in Yemen.

Should I buy or rent a home in Yemen?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Yemen, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Yemen can be a great investment, as the country is experiencing a period of economic growth and stability. However, it is important to consider the risks associated with buying property in a country that is still recovering from a civil war. Renting a home in Yemen may be a more cost-effective option, as it allows you to avoid the upfront costs associated with buying a home and gives you the flexibility to move if needed. Additionally, renting a home in Yemen can provide you with access to amenities and services that may not be available in a purchased home. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Yemen should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," explained one expat living in Yemen.

What do I need to know when buying property in Yemen?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Yemen, they said:

"1. It is important to research the local laws and regulations regarding property ownership in Yemen before making any purchase. 2. It is advisable to hire a local lawyer to assist with the purchase process and to ensure that all legal requirements are met. 3. It is important to be aware of the security situation in Yemen and to take appropriate safety precautions when travelling to view properties. 4. It is important to be aware of the potential for corruption and to ensure that all transactions are conducted in a transparent manner. 5. It is important to be aware of the potential for fraud and to ensure that all documents are verified and authenticated before any money is exchanged. 6. It is important to be aware of the potential for political instability and to ensure that any property purchased is in a safe and secure location," said one foreigner living in Yemen.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Yemen?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Yemen, they said...

"Foreigners are not allowed to own property in Yemen. According to the Yemeni Constitution, only Yemeni citizens are allowed to own land and property in the country. Foreigners are only allowed to lease property in Yemen, and the lease must be approved by the Yemeni government," explained one expat in Yemen.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Yemen what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In Yemen, rental properties typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, and washing machine. Other common appliances may include a microwave, dishwasher, and air conditioning unit. Furniture may also be included in the rental, such as beds, couches, and tables," explained one person living in Yemen.
