When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in New York, they said:

"When buying property in New York, it is important to understand the local market, the zoning regulations and rental laws, and the state and local taxes associated with the transaction. It is also important to be aware of any building maintenance fees, special assessments, and condo fees that may apply. It is important to understand the total cost of purchasing a property in New York, including closing costs, legal fees, title insurance costs, transfer taxes, and other fees. Working with a real estate professional can be helpful in navigating and understanding the process of buying property in New York. Before signing any real estate purchase agreement, it is essential to have the property and contract inspected to check for potential issues or unresolved liens on the property. Lastly, it is important to be aware of any time frames or deadlines associated with the transaction to ensure that everything is properly completed," explained one foreigner living in New York.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in New York?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in New York, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in New York. Non-U.S. citizens are able to purchase real estate in the state of New York, just like any other U.S. citizen. However, there are certain restrictions that may apply, such as the need to obtain a valid visa or other documentation. Additionally, foreign buyers may be subject to additional taxes and fees, depending on the type of property they are purchasing," explained one foreigner living in New York.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in New York what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Generally, a rental property in New York will come with a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, and in some cases a washer and dryer. Heating and air conditioning systems will also be included in the property. Some properties might also include additional appliances such as a microwave and other small appliances," explained one person living in New York.

Additionally, newcomers can look for homes in newspapers or magazines, or attend open houses to get a better feel for the area," explained one person living in New York.
