Many expats choose to live in high-rise buildings with stunning views of the city and the South China Sea. Expat apartments often come with amenities such as swimming pools, gyms, and saunas. Expats can also find homes and apartments with private gardens, balconies, and terraces. Security is also a priority for many expats, with many buildings offering 24-hour security and CCTV surveillance," said one expat who made the move to Macau.

"The cost of housing in Macau is generally quite high, with the average price for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center being around $2,000 per month. Prices for larger apartments and houses can be significantly higher," explained one person living in Macau.

Should I buy or rent a home in Macau?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Macau, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Macau, it is important to consider your lifestyle, budget, and long-term plans. Buying a home in Macau can be a great investment, as property values tend to appreciate over time. However, it is important to factor in the cost of maintenance and repairs, as well as the cost of a down payment and closing costs. Renting a home in Macau can be a more affordable option, as it requires less of an upfront investment. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility, as it allows you to move more easily if your circumstances change. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Macau should be based on your individual needs and preferences," said one person in Macau.

What do I need to know when buying property in Macau?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Macau, they said:

It is important to understand the different types of insurance available in Macau and the associated premiums. 6. It is important to understand the different types of property management services available in Macau and the associated fees. 7. It is important to understand the different types of rental agreements available in Macau and the associated terms and conditions. 8. It is important to understand the different types of maintenance services available in Macau and the associated costs. 9. It is important to understand the different types of utilities available in Macau and the associated costs. 10. It is important to understand the different types of building regulations and safety standards applicable in Macau," said one expat in Macau.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Macau?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Macau, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Macau. The Macau government has implemented a number of measures to facilitate foreign investment in the city, including allowing foreign nationals to purchase real estate. Foreigners are able to purchase residential and commercial properties in Macau, as long as they have the necessary permits and documents. Additionally, foreign investors are able to lease land for up to 50 years, with the option to renew the lease," explained one person living in Macau.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Macau what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in Macau typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, washing machine, and air conditioning unit. Some properties may also include a microwave, dishwasher, and other small appliances," said one in Macau.
