"Buying a home in Somalia can be a great investment, as the country is currently experiencing a period of economic growth and stability. However, it is important to consider the risks associated with buying property in a developing country. Renting a home in Somalia may be a more cost-effective option, as it allows you to avoid the upfront costs associated with buying a home and gives you the flexibility to move if needed. Additionally, renting a home in Somalia can provide you with access to amenities and services that may not be available in a purchased home. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Somalia should be based on your individual needs and preferences," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Somalia.

What do I need to know when buying property in Somalia?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Somalia, they said:

"1. It is important to research the local laws and regulations regarding property ownership in Somalia before making any purchase. 2. It is also important to be aware of the security situation in the area where you are looking to buy property. 3. It is advisable to hire a local lawyer to help you with the legal aspects of the purchase. 4. It is important to ensure that the property is free from any liens or encumbrances before making a purchase. 5. It is also important to be aware of the local customs and traditions when buying property in Somalia. 6. It is advisable to obtain a title deed for the property, which will provide proof of ownership. 7. It is important to be aware of the taxation laws in Somalia, as this may affect the cost of the property. 8. It is also important to be aware of the local infrastructure and services available in the area where you are looking to buy property," said one person in Somalia.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Somalia?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Somalia, they said...

"Foreigners are not allowed to own property in Somalia. The Somali Constitution does not recognize foreign ownership of land or property. The only way for a foreigner to own property in Somalia is to purchase it through a Somali citizen or company. This is done through a lease agreement, which allows the foreign investor to use the property for a certain period of time. The lease agreement must be approved by the Somali government before it can be enforced," explained one foreigner living in Somalia.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Somalia what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In Somalia, rental properties typically include basic kitchen appliances such as a refrigerator, stove, and oven. Other common appliances include a washing machine, air conditioner, and water heater. Depending on the property, some landlords may also provide additional appliances such as a dishwasher, microwave, and television," said one foreigner living in Somalia.

"Expats can search for homes in Somalia by looking for local real estate agents who specialize in helping expats find homes. They can also search online for listings of homes for sale or rent in Somalia. Additionally, expats can ask friends and family who are already living in Somalia for advice on where to look for homes," said one foreigner living in Somalia.
