"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Slovenia is to use online resources such as websites and classifieds. Websites such as Expat.com, Nestpick, and HousingAnywhere offer a wide range of rental options in Slovenia. Additionally, classifieds such as Craigslist and Gumtree can be used to find rental properties in Slovenia. Additionally, it is possible to find rental properties through local real estate agents or by asking around in the local community," said one person in Slovenia.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Slovenia?

"Expat homes and apartments in Slovenia tend to be modern and comfortable, with plenty of natural light and open spaces. Many expats choose to live in larger cities such as Ljubljana, where they can find a variety of housing options, from traditional apartments to modern high-rise buildings. Expats can also find homes in smaller towns and villages, where they can enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle. Most expat homes and apartments come with all the necessary amenities, such as air conditioning, internet access, and modern appliances," said one expat who made the move to Slovenia.

If you are thinking about moving to Slovenia, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Slovenia is generally considered to be quite reasonable, with prices varying depending on the location and type of property. Generally, apartments in the cities tend to be more expensive than those in rural areas, while detached houses are usually more expensive than apartments. Prices also vary depending on the size and condition of the property," said one person in Slovenia.

Should I buy or rent a home in Slovenia?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Slovenia, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Slovenia can be a great investment, as the country has a strong economy and a growing real estate market. However, it is important to consider the costs associated with buying a home, such as closing costs, taxes, and maintenance. Renting a home in Slovenia can be a more affordable option, as it does not require a large upfront investment. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility, as it allows you to move more easily if your circumstances change. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Slovenia should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," explained one person living in Slovenia.

What do I need to know when buying property in Slovenia?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Slovenia, they said:

"1. It is important to research the local market and familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations governing property purchases in Slovenia. 2. You should also consider the costs associated with buying property in Slovenia, such as taxes, fees, and other expenses. 3. It is important to hire a qualified lawyer to help you with the legal aspects of the purchase. 4. You should also consider the location of the property and its proximity to amenities such as schools, shops, and public transportation. 5. You should also be aware of any restrictions or zoning laws that may affect the use of the property. 6. It is also important to obtain a survey of the property to ensure that it is in good condition and free of any potential problems. 7. Finally, you should make sure that you have all the necessary documents and paperwork in order before signing any contracts," explained one person living in Slovenia.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Slovenia?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Slovenia, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Slovenia. Non-residents of Slovenia are allowed to purchase real estate in the country, however they must obtain a permit from the Ministry of Justice in order to do so. The permit is usually granted if the buyer can prove that the purchase is in the public interest or if the buyer is a foreign company or a foreign citizen with a valid residence permit. Additionally, foreign citizens must also register with the tax office and obtain a tax number in order to purchase property in Slovenia," wrote one expat who made the move to Slovenia.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Slovenia what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In Slovenia, rental properties typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, and washing machine. Other common appliances may include a dishwasher, microwave, and air conditioning unit. Depending on the property, some landlords may also provide additional amenities such as a clothes dryer, television, and internet access," said one foreigner living in Slovenia.
