What do I need to know before moving to Zurich?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Zurich, they said:

"1. Before moving to Zurich it is important to be familiar with the climate. Zurich is known for its mild weather, with average summer temperatures around 22°C and winter temperatures around 1°C. 2. Research the housing situation in Zurich. Rent in Zurich is generally quite high, so it can be a challenge to find an affordable place to live. 3. Make sure you have the right documents to be able to move to Zurich. Citizens of EU countries, Switzerland and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries do not need a visa or work permit to work and live in Zurich. For non-EU citizens, a valid work permit or a residency permit is required to stay in Zurich. 4. Research and learn some of the local language. Zurich is situated in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, so being able to speak the language might come in handy. 5. Consider the cost of living and healthcare. Zurich is known to be one of the most expensive cities to live in. Healthcare and social insurance are offered through public schemes in Switzerland, so make sure you and your family can receive the necessary health coverage when you move. 6. Plan and research transportation options in advance. Zurich has a good public transportation network, which includes trams, buses and trains," said one expat who made the move to Zurich.

"I can recommend the relocation company we used as they are friendly and efficient," explained one expat living in Zurich, Switzerland.

How do I find a place to live in Zurich?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Zurich can be challenging due to the high demand for housing. It is advised to start your search in advance to give yourself enough time to find a suitable place. Research your options and budget carefully, as a variety of housing options are available, ranging from apartments, to flats and studios. Consider using a real estate agent or a relocation service to increase your chances of finding a place quickly. Online property search websites like Immoscout24, Homegate and Home.ch can also be helpful for listing available properties and getting an understanding of the local housing market. Ensure that you have your documents ready, such as employment contract, reference letter from your bank and proof of financial resources, which may be required during the tenancy application process," explained one expat living in Zurich, Switzerland.

"We used All-in-One Swiss Relocation Services, which did a great job finding the appropriate place for us to live in," said one expat in Zurich.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Zurich?

"Share farm house. And no, I don't think this is normal, but it suited me very well. I think most expats would prefer the city. It was a share farm house with 2 blokes. However, take on board that public transport is very reliable and comfortable in Switzerland. Much better than my own country," explained one expat living in Zurich, Switzerland.

"A typical expat home or apartment in Zurich will be modern, spacious and comfortable, with a high level of amenities. Generally, these apartments and homes feature a mix of contemporary decor and furnishing and classic design and living elements. There is usually a generous amount of space along with plenty of natural light, high ceilings and often access to a balcony. Common amenities and facilities include a fully-equipped kitchen, multiple bathrooms with modern and stylish fixtures, large closets and sometimes a separate laundry room. Many expat apartments also offer access to a shared pool, a gym and a range of concierge services. Parking, or at least a parking permit, is also often available," said one expat in Zurich.

What is the average cost of housing in Zurich?

If you are thinking about moving to Zurich, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"As in this share (country village) situation, it was cheaper. There is more competition for utilities than in my country (Australia). However, in my experience, renting a whole apartment was much more expensive than my home country," remarked one expat in Zurich, Switzerland.

"The cost of housing in Zurich is typically high, with rents in the city centre being among the highest in the world. Prices vary significantly depending on the size, condition, and location of the property, but average rents for apartments in the city are around 2,000-3,000 Swiss Francs per month," said one expat in Zurich.

Should I buy or rent a home in Zurich?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Zurich, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Zurich depends on your personal preferences and financial situation. Buying a home is often more expensive upfront, but you will benefit from building equity in a home and potentially taking advantage of tax benefits. On the other hand, renting can be less expensive and more flexible, allowing you the opportunity to move without needing to sell your home. Ultimately, the decision is yours depending on what best suits your needs," said one expat in Zurich.

What should I pack when moving to Zurich?

We asked people living in Zurich to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"Wish to have left home = sandals, not so many skimpy summer clothes Wish to have brought with me = good walking boots, better camera, vegemite," said one expat in Zurich.

"Essential items to pack when moving to Zurich include clothes suitable for the climate, a passport and other travel documents, personal hygiene items, any necessary medication, kitchen equipment and supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletries, bedding and linens, furniture, electronics and appliances (if needed), and any items of sentimental value," said one expat who made the move to Zurich.
