When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Montevideo, they said:

The city has a temperate climate, with mild winters and hot summers. Uruguay has a high standard of living and is considered one of the safest countries in Latin America. The healthcare system in Uruguay is of a high standard, with both public and private options available. Expats can buy into the national healthcare system or opt for private health insurance. Uruguayans are known for their friendly and welcoming nature, and the country has a relaxed pace of life. The cuisine in Uruguay is heavily meat-based, with beef being a staple part of the diet. The country is also known for its wine, particularly Tannat. Public transportation in Montevideo is reliable and affordable, with a comprehensive bus system. However, many expats choose to drive, and the process to get a local driving license is straightforward. Uruguay has a strong economy, with sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and IT offering job opportunities for expats. However, the job market is competitive, and having a job offer before moving is advisable. The education system in Uruguay is of a high standard, with a range of public and private schools, as well as international schools. The country is also home to the University of the Republic, the largest and most prestigious university in Uruguay. Uruguay has a progressive stance on social issues, being the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage and marijuana. The country is also known for its strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Bedrooms are usually large and comfortable, with ample storage space. Many homes also have home offices, reflecting the increasing trend of remote work among expats. In terms of amenities, many expat apartments in Montevideo come with access to a communal swimming pool, gym, and sometimes even a sauna or spa. If you're looking to buy property, the price per square meter in the city center can be around $2,500 to $3,500, while outside the city center it can be around $1,500 to $2,500. However, these prices can fluctuate based on market conditions and other factors," said one expat in Montevideo.

Should I buy or rent a home in Montevideo?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Montevideo, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Montevideo, largely depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in Montevideo for a long period, buying a home could be a good investment. Owning a home allows you to build equity over time and could provide financial stability in the long run. However, buying a home also comes with significant upfront costs, including a down payment, closing costs, and potential renovation expenses. It also requires a long-term commitment, as selling a home can take time and effort. If you're not sure about your long-term plans or if you prefer not to deal with maintenance and other homeowner responsibilities, renting might be a better option for you. Renting a home in Montevideo offers more flexibility. It's a good option if you're planning to stay for a short period or if you're still exploring different neighborhoods before settling down. Renting also means you won't have to worry about maintenance costs or property taxes, as these are typically covered by the landlord. However, renting doesn't build equity and rental rates can increase over time. You also have less control over your living situation, as landlords can decide to sell the property or not renew your lease. In conclusion, both buying and renting a home in Montevideo have their pros and cons. It's important to consider your financial situation, lifestyle, and long-term plans before making a decision. Consulting with a real estate professional or financial advisor can also provide valuable insights tailored to your specific situation," said one expat in Montevideo.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Montevideo?

We asked people in Montevideo if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"When visiting Montevideo, it's important to avoid discussing politics unless you are well-informed about the country's political situation. Uruguayans are very politically aware and discussions can become heated. Avoid comparing Uruguay to Argentina, as there is a long-standing rivalry between the two countries. This extends to sports as well, particularly football. Uruguayans are known for their punctuality, so try not to be late for appointments or social gatherings. If you are running late, it's polite to call and let your host know. It's considered rude to interrupt someone while they're speaking, so wait for your turn to talk during conversations. Avoid being overly loud or boisterous in public places, as Uruguayans tend to be more reserved and value their personal space. When dining, it's considered impolite to begin eating before everyone has been served. Also, keep your hands on the table (but not your elbows) when you're not eating. Uruguayans are very friendly and hospitable, so refusing an invitation to someone's home can be seen as rude. If you can't attend, be sure to decline politely and offer a valid reason. Finally, tipping is customary in Uruguay, so be sure to leave a tip of around 10% in restaurants and for other services," said one expat who made the move to Montevideo.
