What do I need to know before moving to Zlin?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Zlin, they said:

"Zlin is a city in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic, known for its rich history and industrial heritage. The official language is Czech, but English is also widely spoken, especially by younger generations and in the business sector. The cost of living in Zlin is relatively low compared to other European cities, making it an attractive place for expats. The city has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses and trams, making it easy to get around. Zlin is known for its high quality of education, with several universities and schools offering a wide range of programs. The city has a continental climate, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Zlin offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities, including museums, theaters, parks, and sports facilities. The city is also known for its architecture, particularly the functionalist buildings designed by the famous Czech architect Le Corbusier. Healthcare in Zlin is of a high standard, with several hospitals and clinics available for both emergency and routine care. The city is safe and has a low crime rate, but like any other place, it's advisable to take standard precautions. Czech cuisine is hearty and diverse, with dishes like goulash, dumplings, and trdelnik being popular. Zlin is in the Central European Time Zone, and the currency used is the Czech koruna. The city is also home to the famous Bata Shoes company, and the Bata Shoe Museum is a popular tourist attraction. Renting property in Zlin is straightforward, with a range of options available from apartments to family homes. It's important to note that while Czech people are generally friendly and welcoming, they can also be quite reserved and private. Finally, it's worth noting that Zlin is a great base for exploring the rest of the Czech Republic, with excellent transport links to other major cities," said one expat in Zlin.

How do I find a place to live in Zlin?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Zlinublic involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a shared apartment to a single-family home. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Zlin to find one that suits your lifestyle and needs. Some popular neighborhoods include the city center, Prštné, and Malenovice. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online platforms where you can find listings for rentals in Zlin, such as Sreality.cz, Bezrealitky.cz, and Flatfy.cz. These websites allow you to filter your search based on your preferences, such as the number of bedrooms, price range, and location. In addition to online listings, you can also contact local real estate agencies. They can provide you with more personalized assistance and may have access to listings that are not advertised online. When you find a place that you're interested in, you should arrange a viewing. This will give you a chance to see the property in person and ask any questions you may have. Before signing a lease, make sure to read it carefully and understand all the terms and conditions. If you're not fluent in Czech, you might want to have a translator or a local friend help you with this. Finally, once you've signed the lease, you'll need to set up utilities and internet service, and then you can move into your new home in Zlin," said one expat who made the move to Zlin.

As of recent data, the cost of purchasing an apartment in the city center may be moderately high, while in the outskirts it is relatively cheaper. Should I buy or rent a home in Zlin?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Zlin, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Zlinublic, depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in Zlin for an extended period and have a stable income, buying a home could be a good investment, as it allows you to build equity and potentially benefit from the appreciation of property value over time. Additionally, owning a home provides a sense of stability and the freedom to make changes to the property as you wish. On the other hand, if you are unsure about your long-term plans or prefer flexibility, renting might be a better option. Moreover, renting can be more affordable in the short term, as you do not have to worry about property taxes, maintenance costs, and other expenses associated with homeownership. It is essential to carefully consider your options and consult with a local real estate expert to make the best decision for your needs," explained one expat living in Zlin, Czechia.

You should also pack a good pair of walking shoes, as Zlin is a walkable city with many pedestrian zones. Don't forget to pack your personal documents, including your passport, visa, and any other necessary identification. If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring enough to last until you can arrange for a refill in your new city. Pack any electronics you use regularly, such as your laptop, phone, and chargers. You may also want to bring some personal items to make your new place feel like home, such as photos, favorite books, or small keepsakes. If you're planning on cooking, you might want to pack some basic kitchen utensils, as these can be expensive to buy new. Lastly, don't forget to pack toiletries and other personal care items, as these can be more expensive in the Czech Republic compared to other countries," commented one expat who made the move to Zlin.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Zlin?

We asked people in Zlin if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In Zlinublic, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Here are some tips: Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, and the country's communist past. Czechs are generally private people and may not appreciate such discussions, especially with strangers. Do not assume that everyone speaks English. While many Czechs do speak English, especially the younger generation, it's polite to ask if they speak English before starting a conversation. Do not forget to say "Dobrý den" (Good day) when entering shops, restaurants, or other establishments. It's considered rude not to greet people in this way. Avoid being loud and boisterous in public places. Czechs are generally reserved and value quiet and order. Do not leave a mess when you're eating or drinking at a pub or restaurant. Czechs take pride in their cleanliness and expect others to do the same. Avoid being overly familiar or touchy-feely. Czechs are not typically very demonstrative in public and may be uncomfortable with too much physical contact. Do not ignore queues or try to jump the line. Czechs are very orderly and respect the concept of "first come, first served". Avoid making jokes about Czech beer. Beer is a source of national pride in the Czech Republic, and any negative comments or jokes about it may not be well received. Do not refuse when offered a drink. It's considered rude to turn down a drink, especially when it's offered as a gesture of hospitality. Remember to take off your shoes when entering someone's home. It's customary in the Czech Republic to remove your shoes at the door," said one expat who made the move to Zlin.
