What do I need to know before moving to Salinas?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Salinas, they said:

"This is not for everyone so take your time and pick the place you love don't settle. Bring as many of your current household items to make it feel like home and not a beach rental. It will make all the difference in the world. Ask questions to everyone you meet in the area. They will give you honest answers on the pro and cons of the area," explained one expat living in Salinas, Ecuador.

"Salinas is located along the Pacific Coast and offers a balance of city life and beach living. Expats should be aware that the city is hot and humid, due to its tropical climate, and that the rainy season runs from December to May. English is not widely spoken in Salinas, so it is recommended that expats learn at least some basic Spanish before moving there. Salinas offers plenty of outdoor activities, from beaches and surfing to trekking, fishing and whale watching. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as cultural attractions like museums and art galleries. The cost of living in Salinas is quite affordable, with most expats being able to live quite comfortably on a modest budget," said one expat in Salinas, Ecuador.

How do I find a place to live in Salinas?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Salinas may seem daunting at first, but there are a variety of options available to suit everyone's needs. One of the best ways to start the search is to look online. There are several rental websites dedicated to connecting people with available properties in Salinas, such as Ecuadorexpat.net and Encuentra24.com. Additionally, there are several local real estate agents, such as Marcocar Realty, Graviaventas, and Simplerent.ec, which can help you find the perfect residence. Finally, speaking to people who already live in the area is a great way to gain local insight and discover hidden gems. With these resources, you should be able to find a place to call home," said one expat in Salinas, Ecuador.

"We came to Ecuador 4 times and fell in love with Salinas. We had a realtor help us find our new condo," remarked one expat who made the move to Salinas.

"Rentals in Salinas: You might also consider Porto Lucia if you are interested in Salinas. Much more tranquil than malecon de Salinas yet still in Salinas. If you prefer ocean front living at a budget price there are a few condo options available most are rented fully furnished. Walk to largest shopping center & next .to yacht club & marina. Look on Google maps for location. Hope this helps as an option, most expats do not know about this location when viewing Salinas," explained one expat living in Salinas, Ecuador.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Salinas?

"In Salinas you also can find less crowded areas away from the busy weekend tourism and noise. Little known is Porto Lucia a 15 min drive from the Malecon of Salinas. Here you can find quiet beachfront living with modern furnished condos on beachfront with all the amenities of the crowded Salinas tourist area & walking distance to the largest mall in the area. You can find it on google maps. Another option to the tourist area of Salinas yet still in Salinas," replied a member in Salinas.

"A typical expat home or apartment in Salinas is typically modern and well-maintained, with top-notch facilities, and often with balconies for a stunning view of the ocean. Expat apartments tend to be spacious, with extra features such as a washing machine, glazed windows, and tiled floors, making them a great choice for those looking for comfort and convenience. This city is known for its warm climate, beautiful beaches and inclusive community, so it's no wonder that expats are drawn here," commented one expat who made the move to Salinas, Ecuador.

What is the average cost of housing in Salinas?

If you are thinking about moving to Salinas, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Salinas is relatively affordable and varies depending on location and size. The cost usually ranges from $300 to $600 per month for an apartment or house in the city center, with larger homes and beachfront locations costing more. Prices are lower outside of downtown Salinas," replied a member in Salinas, Ecuador.

"They are much lower. The average cost is hard to say because the range is so broad depending on what you want. I will say the property taxes are 1% of the purchase price per year," commented one expat who made the move to Salinas.

Should I buy or rent a home in Salinas?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Salinas, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a property in Salinas is an attractive option for potential owners as it offers a variety of options; you can choose to live in the city centre where all the amenities are close by, or you can buy a property further out in the countryside and enjoy the tranquillity. Renting offers a more flexible and cost-effective solution if you're looking for a short-term stay, but if you're planning on living in the area for a long period of time, then purchasing a property may be the better option. Consider your budget when making the decision, and if you're unsure, speak to local real estate agents to get an assessment of the market," explained one expat living in Salinas, Ecuador, Ecuador.

What should I pack when moving to Salinas?

We asked people living in Salinas to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"Three things I wish I had brought were tools, paper products and body wash. Three things I wish I had left at home were many of my shoes, blankets, and hair products (not necessary to do anything but a pony tail)," remarked one expat who made the move to Salinas.

"When moving to Salinas, it is important to pack comfortable, lightweight clothing items that can be layered as the climate tends to fluctuate. In addition, due to the high levels of humidity, it’s important to bring clothing and materials that are quick-drying, such as fast-drying fabrics, or items made from treated materials. The sun is very strong in Salinas, so it would also be beneficial to bring a variety of hats, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen, as well as insect repellent. Since Salinas receives a lot of rain during the winter months, it’s also important to bring a good umbrella, raincoat, and waterproof shoes. Lastly, it’s always beneficial to bring any essential electronic items and/or adapters in case you need them," explained one expat living in Salinas, Ecuador, Ecuador.
