What do I need to know before moving to Bishkek?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Bishkek, they said:

"Before moving to Bishkek, expats should be aware that the city is located in a seismically active region and is prone to earthquakes. Expats should also be aware that the city experiences extreme temperatures, with hot summers and cold winters. Additionally, expats should be aware that the city has a limited public transportation system and that most people rely on taxis or private cars to get around. Expats should also be aware that the city has a large expat community and that there are many resources available to help them adjust to their new home. Finally, expats should be aware that the city is relatively safe, but that they should take precautions to protect themselves and their belongings," explained one expat living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

"I recommend living in the city of Bishkek. Everything is in walking distance and there are nice parks," said one expat in Bishkek.

How do I find a place to live in Bishkek?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One option for finding a place to live in Bishkek is to search online for rental listings. Websites such as expat.com, expat-blog.com, and expat-quotes.com offer listings of apartments and houses for rent in Bishkek. Additionally, there are many local real estate agencies that can help you find a place to live in Bishkek. You can also ask around in the local expat community for recommendations on where to look for a place to live. Finally, you can also look for rental postings in local newspapers and on bulletin boards in cafes and other public places," said one expat who made the move to Bishkek.

Apartments tend to be spacious and well-equipped, with modern appliances and furnishings. Many expats also choose to live in gated communities, which offer additional security and privacy," commented one expat who made the move to Bishkek.

What is the average cost of housing in Bishkek?

If you are thinking about moving to Bishkek, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Bishkek varies depending on the size and location of the property. Generally, apartments in the city center tend to be more expensive than those located in the suburbs. Prices for one-bedroom apartments in the city center range from around $400 to $1,000 per month, while two-bedroom apartments can cost up to $1,500 per month. In the suburbs, one-bedroom apartments can cost as little as $200 per month, while two-bedroom apartments can cost up to $800 per month," said one expat in Bishkek.

Should I buy or rent a home in Bishkek?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Bishkek, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Bishkek, it is important to consider your budget, lifestyle, and long-term plans. Buying a home in Bishkek can be a great investment, as property values are likely to increase over time. However, it is important to factor in the cost of maintenance and repairs, as well as the cost of a down payment. Renting a home in Bishkek can be a more affordable option, and it can provide more flexibility if you are not sure how long you will be living in the city. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Bishkek should be based on your individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Bishkek.

What should I pack when moving to Bishkek?

We asked people living in Bishkek to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Bishkek, it is important to pack warm clothing, as temperatures can drop to below freezing in the winter months. It is also a good idea to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent, as the sun can be strong and the summer months can bring a lot of bugs. Additionally, it is important to bring a good supply of any medications you may need, as well as a first aid kit. It is also a good idea to bring a few items to make your new home feel more comfortable, such as pictures, books, and other items that remind you of home," explained one expat living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

"I wish I had brought more of: my favorite beauty/toiletry items, non-perishable food/sauce mixes, coffee I wish I had left at home: my good shoes, pasta (there is plenty over here), skirts," said one expat in Bishkek.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Bishkek?

We asked people in Bishkek if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be mindful of cultural norms when visiting Bishkek. It is important to dress modestly and to avoid public displays of affection. It is also important to be respectful of religious customs and to avoid taking photographs of people without their permission. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local customs and to avoid making jokes about the local culture or people. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language," said one expat in Bishkek.

"If I have, no one has told me. I learned that you shouldn't sit cross legged if you're a woman. Don't clean the table with a napkin or sit on the corner of a table because it will mean that you are not going to get married," said one expat who made the move to Bishkek.

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Bishkek, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Bishkek, are a mix of public and private facilities, with the public sector being the primary provider of healthcare services. The city has several hospitals, clinics, and medical centers that offer a range of services, including general medicine, surgery, maternity care, and emergency services. However, the public healthcare system in Bishkek faces challenges such as outdated equipment, insufficient funding, and a lack of qualified medical professionals. In recent years, private healthcare facilities have emerged in Bishkek, offering higher quality services and modern equipment. These private clinics and hospitals cater to both locals and expatriates, providing services such as dental care, diagnostics, and specialized treatments. However, private healthcare services can be expensive, and not all residents can afford them. Pharmacies are widely available throughout Bishkek, with many operating 24 hours a day. They offer a range of over-the-counter and prescription medications, although the availability of specific medications may be limited. Foreigners visiting or living in Bishkek are advised to have comprehensive medical insurance, as the quality of healthcare services can vary greatly. In case of serious medical emergencies, it may be necessary to seek treatment in a neighboring country or be evacuated to a country with more advanced healthcare facilities," offered one expat living in Bishkek.

What are medical services in Bishkek like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Bishkek, they replied:

"Medical services in Bishkek, are relatively limited compared to Western standards. Public hospitals and clinics often suffer from a lack of funding, outdated equipment, and insufficient staffing. Private clinics and hospitals are available, but they may not always offer the same level of care as those in more developed countries. The quality of medical care can vary greatly, and it is recommended that expats and travelers seek out reputable facilities and doctors. Pharmacies are widely available, but the availability of certain medications may be limited. It is advised to bring any necessary prescription medications when traveling to Bishkek. In case of serious medical emergencies, medical evacuation to a nearby country with better facilities may be necessary," wrote one expat living in Bishkek.
