What do I need to know before moving to Repulse Bay?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Repulse Bay, they said:

"Repulse Bay is one of the most luxurious residential areas in Hong Kong, known for its high-end properties and beautiful beach. The cost of living in Repulse Bay is significantly higher than in other parts of Hong Kong, with rent for apartments and houses being particularly expensive. The area is home to a number of international schools, making it a popular choice for expat families with children. Public transportation in Repulse Bay is reliable and efficient, with regular bus services connecting the area to other parts of Hong Kong. Despite being a residential area, Repulse Bay has a good selection of restaurants, cafes, and shops, so you won't have to travel far for dining or shopping. The area is also home to several luxury hotels and resorts, which often have facilities such as gyms and swimming pools that are open to non-guests for a fee. Repulse Bay is a popular tourist destination, so it can get crowded, particularly on weekends and public holidays. The area is known for its outdoor activities, with opportunities for hiking, swimming, and water sports. While English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, learning some basic Cantonese phrases can be helpful. It's important to be aware of Hong Kong's strict waste disposal laws, which include fines for littering and illegal dumping. Healthcare in Hong Kong is of a high standard, but it can be expensive, so it's advisable to have comprehensive health insurance. Hong Kong has a subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters, so it's important to be prepared for this when moving to Repulse Bay. Finally, while Repulse Bay is generally considered safe, it's still important to take standard precautions to protect your personal safety and belongings," remarked one expat in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

How do I find a place to live in Repulse Bay?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Repulse Bay involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget. This will help you narrow down your options as Repulse Bay is known for its high-end residential properties. Next, you should decide on the type of accommodation you want. Repulse Bay offers a range of options from luxury apartments to detached houses. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate platforms that list properties for rent or sale in Repulse Bay. Websites like Squarefoot, 28Hse, and Spacious are popular choices. You can filter your search based on your preferences such as the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and other amenities. It's also a good idea to engage a real estate agent who specializes in Repulse Bay properties. They can provide you with expert advice and help you navigate the local real estate market. Once you've found a potential place, arrange a viewing. This will give you a better sense of the property's condition, its proximity to amenities, and the neighborhood. If you're satisfied with the property, you can proceed to negotiate the terms and conditions of the lease or purchase. Finally, once everything is agreed upon, you can sign the contract. Make sure to read it carefully and understand all the terms before signing. Remember, moving to a new place can be a complex process, so it's important to do your research and take your time to find the right place for you," remarked one expat who made the move to Repulse Bay.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Repulse Bay?

"A typical expat home or apartment in Repulse Bay, is often a high-end, luxurious space with modern amenities. These homes are usually spacious, with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a large living area. Many of these apartments offer stunning views of the bay and the surrounding cityscape. They often come with facilities like a swimming pool, gym, and sometimes even a private garden or terrace. The interiors are usually well-designed, with a blend of contemporary and traditional Chinese elements. The location of these homes is also a major draw, as Repulse Bay is known for its beautiful beach, high-end restaurants, and shopping centers. Despite being in a bustling city, these homes often offer a sense of tranquility and privacy. The buildings themselves are often well-maintained, with 24-hour security and concierge services," remarked one expat who made the move to Repulse Bay.

What is the average cost of housing in Repulse Bay?

If you are thinking about moving to Repulse Bay, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Repulse Bay is quite high due to its status as one of the most luxurious residential areas in the city. Prices can vary greatly depending on the size and specific location of the property, but on average, you can expect to pay several million US dollars for a home in this area. Some of the most expensive properties in Repulse Bay can even reach up to tens of millions of dollars. It's also worth noting that rental prices are also quite steep, with luxury apartments often costing several thousand dollars per month," remarked one expat who made the move to Repulse Bay.

Should I buy or rent a home in Repulse Bay?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Repulse Bay, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Repulse Bay, largely depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you have a stable income, plan to stay in the area for a long time, and can afford the high upfront costs, buying a home could be a good investment. Owning a property in Repulse Bay, one of the most luxurious residential areas in Hong Kong, could potentially yield high returns in the future. On the other hand, if you're unsure about your long-term plans or you prefer not to tie up a large amount of money in a property, renting might be a better option. Renting can offer more flexibility, as it's easier to move if your circumstances change. It also doesn't require a large initial investment, which could be beneficial if you'd rather invest your money elsewhere. It's also worth considering the high property prices in Hong Kong, which are among the highest in the world. This could make buying a home in Repulse Bay unaffordable for many people. However, rental prices can also be high, so it's important to carefully consider your budget and financial goals. In conclusion, both buying and renting a home in Repulse Bay have their pros and cons. It's important to carefully consider your personal circumstances and financial situation before making a decision. Consulting with a financial advisor or real estate professional could also be beneficial," remarked one expat in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

What should I pack when moving to Repulse Bay?

We asked people living in Repulse Bay to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Repulse Bay, you should pack a variety of clothing suitable for a subtropical climate, including lightweight clothing for the hot and humid summers, and warmer clothing for the cooler winters. Rain gear, such as a waterproof jacket and umbrella, is also essential due to the frequent rain showers and typhoons. Pack your important documents, such as your passport, visa, and other identification, as well as any necessary medical records and prescriptions. Don't forget your electronics, including your phone, laptop, and any necessary chargers or adapters. If you're planning on cooking, you might want to bring some of your favorite non-perishable food items, as they may be hard to find in local grocery stores. Similarly, if you have favorite toiletries or personal care items, consider bringing a supply with you, as brands may vary. Bring any necessary items for work or school, such as textbooks or office supplies. If you're moving with children, don't forget their favorite toys or comfort items to help them adjust to the new environment. Lastly, consider packing items that will make your new place feel like home, such as photos, decorations, or favorite books. Remember, you can always buy furniture and larger household items once you arrive to save space in your luggage," said one expat in Repulse Bay.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Repulse Bay?

We asked people in Repulse Bay if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In Repulse Bay, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, especially issues related to China and Hong Kong's relationship. When visiting temples or religious sites, dress modestly and refrain from taking pictures without permission. It's also considered disrespectful to point at religious statues or touch them. In restaurants, don't stick your chopsticks upright in your rice bowl as it's associated with funerals. Also, if you're not using your chopsticks, place them on the chopstick rest or across your bowl or plate, not on the table. Avoid littering as Hong Kong has strict laws about cleanliness. Also, refrain from smoking in public places as it's banned in most areas. Hong Kong people value personal space, so avoid touching people unless you know them well. This includes avoiding patting someone on the back or touching someone's arm during conversation. When giving or receiving something, use both hands. This is seen as a sign of respect. Lastly, punctuality is highly valued in Hong Kong. Being late for appointments or meetings is considered rude and disrespectful," said one expat in Repulse Bay.
