People in Negombo are generally accepting of differences, and the city is known for its tolerance and hospitality. What are the schools in Negombo like?

AIS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Education. The school has a strong focus on academic excellence, with a wide range of extracurricular activities and a commitment to developing global citizens. The Negombo International School (NIS) is a private, co-educational school that offers a British-style curriculum from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. NIS is accredited by the Cambridge International Examinations and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Education. The school has a strong focus on academic excellence, with a wide range of extracurricular activities and a commitment to developing global citizens. The Negombo Bilingual School (NBS) is a private, co-educational school that offers a bilingual curriculum in English and Sinhala from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. "I would advise future parents to enroll their child(ren) in the exta-curricular activities available as, you will most likely not live around any of the other school children," remarked one expat living in Negombo with children attending Negombo International Children's Education.

They also enjoy the friendly and welcoming local community, as well as the affordable cost of living, which allows for a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. The city's proximity to the Bandaranaike International Airport is another advantage, making it easy for expats and digital nomads to travel in and out of the country. Negombo's vibrant culture, with its mix of Sinhalese, Tamil, and colonial influences, is another aspect that expats and digital nomads find appealing. The city offers a variety of local and international cuisine, with an abundance of fresh seafood, as well as a lively nightlife scene. However, there are also some challenges that expats and digital nomads may face while living in Negombo. One common complaint is the lack of reliable public transportation, which can make getting around the city difficult. It is also advisable to speak to other expats in the area to get an idea of the best areas to live in and the best housing options. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the housing is secure and that the landlord is reliable. Finally, it is important to ensure that the housing is comfortable and meets all of your needs," remarked one expat living in Negombo.

What are medical services in Negombo like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Negombo, they replied:

"Medical services in Negombo, are relatively accessible, with a mix of public and private healthcare facilities available. The city has a government hospital, the Negombo District General Hospital, which provides basic healthcare services and emergency care. There are also several private hospitals and clinics in the area, offering a range of medical services, including specialist consultations, diagnostic services, and dental care. However, the quality of healthcare may vary between facilities, and more complex medical cases may require patients to travel to Colombo, the capital city, for advanced treatment. It is also important to note that medical staff may have limited English proficiency, which could pose communication challenges for foreign visitors," commented one expat who moved to Negombo.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Negombo?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Negombo, can be considered relatively affordable compared to many Western countries. The cost of medical treatments and consultations in both public and private hospitals is generally low. However, the quality of healthcare may vary, with private hospitals offering better facilities and services than public ones. Health insurance is available, but not mandatory, and the premiums are usually reasonable. Expatriates and tourists are advised to obtain comprehensive health insurance to cover any potential medical expenses during their stay in the country," commented one expat living in Negombo, Sri Lanka.

"We have had no experiences with regard to the use of our health insurance as either the cost was too low to even bother with it or it was pre-existing and was not going to be covered so was out of pocket. Yes, we have Cigna Global Health Insurance as to be a foreign resident in Sri Lanka it is required to have health insurance coverage. It has been vague if the insurance will cover Nawaloka, Negombo Branch but their map showing most hospitals for us to go to are in Colombo (27 miles distance). I can't get an answer from Nawaloka Hospital, Negombo Branch either if they would accept Cigna here locally. I did pick Cigna Global as most of the other insurance outfits seemed kind of dicey and it was the best of the lot. ," remarked one expat living in Negombo.

Eating dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in Negombo will typically cost around $10 USD per person," said one expat.

What are the visa & residency requirements in Negombo?

"In order to visit Negombo, visitors must obtain a visa prior to their arrival. The process of applying for a visa involves submitting an application form, providing a valid passport, and paying the applicable visa fee. Depending on the purpose of the visit, the visa may be valid for a single entry or multiple entries. In order to obtain residency in Negombo, Sri Lanka, applicants must submit an application form, provide a valid passport, and provide proof of sufficient funds to support themselves. They must also provide proof of a valid address in Negombo, and may be required to provide additional documents such as a police report or medical certificate. Once the application is approved, the applicant will be issued a residency permit," said an expat in Negombo.
