When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Southampton, they said:

"Before moving to Southampton, expats should know that the cost of living is quite high, with housing, groceries, and utilities being more expensive than in many other countries. English is the official language, but the local accent may take some getting used to. The currency used is the Bermudian dollar, which is pegged to the US dollar, and both currencies are accepted everywhere. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Healthcare in Bermuda is of a high standard, but it can be expensive, so comprehensive health insurance is recommended. Bermuda has a rich history and culture, with cricket being the most popular sport and Gombey dancing a traditional form of entertainment. The island is also known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, which offer great opportunities for outdoor activities. The kitchen is usually equipped with modern appliances, including a dishwasher, refrigerator, and oven. Some homes also have a separate laundry room with a washer and dryer. Outdoor living is a significant part of life in Bermuda, so many homes have a patio or deck, often with stunning views of the ocean. Some homes also have a private pool or access to a communal pool. Despite being in a tropical paradise, these homes are also equipped with modern conveniences such as air conditioning, high-speed internet, and cable TV. What do expats find most challenging?

The slow pace of life, known as "island time", can also be difficult for those accustomed to a faster, more punctual lifestyle. Additionally, the limited availability of goods and services, due to the island's isolated location, can be a source of frustration. Lastly, the humid subtropical climate, while appealing to some, can be uncomfortable for those not used to high levels of humidity," wrote a member in Southampton.

Is there a lot of crime in Southampton?

We asked people if there is a lot of crime. They answered:

"Southampton is generally considered a safe area with a relatively low crime rate. Like any location, it does experience some crime, but it is typically minor and non-violent in nature. The most common types of crime are petty theft and burglary. Violent crime is rare, especially against tourists. The local police force is active and responsive, contributing to the overall safety of the area. However, residents and visitors are always advised to take standard precautions to protect their personal safety and belongings," remarked one expat living in Southampton, Bermuda.
