What are medical services in Da Nang like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Da Nang, they replied:

"Medical services in Da Nang, are generally adequate for basic healthcare needs, with several public and private hospitals available in the city. Public hospitals tend to be crowded and may have limited resources, while private hospitals offer better facilities and English-speaking staff. However, for more serious or complex medical issues, it is recommended to seek treatment in larger cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, or even travel to nearby countries with more advanced healthcare systems. It is essential for visitors to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, as local hospitals may not be equipped to handle all emergencies. Pharmacies are widely available in Da Nang, but it is advised to bring a sufficient supply of prescription medications, as the availability of specific drugs may be limited," remarked one expat in Da Nang.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Da Nang?

"Cigna is expensive for us simply, because when we go to the USA we are not covered. So, we get a travel insurance and pay out of pocket for most heavy expenses. For example, I had to be hospitalized on a visit home and I didn't even reach the 5K deductible. It's frustrating. I get reimbursed for other expenses that I incur for example, dental emergencies etc. I am reconsidering how to deal with this situation in the next year," said one expat living in Da Nang.

"Healthcare and health insurance in Da Nang, can be considered relatively affordable compared to many Western countries. Public hospitals and clinics offer low-cost services, but the quality of care and facilities may not be up to international standards. Private hospitals and clinics are more expensive but provide better quality care and modern facilities. Health insurance is available at various price points, with local insurance being more affordable than international coverage. However, it is essential to carefully review the coverage and benefits of any insurance plan before purchasing. Overall, healthcare and health insurance costs in Da Nang are generally manageable, but the quality of care and coverage can vary significantly," mentioned one expat in Da Nang.

What are emergency services like in Da Nang?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Da Nang wrote:

"My Hoan is the hospital that I used for the medical clearance needed to get a work permit. Women have babies delivered at the Women's hospital. There is a Cancer Hospital (Da Nang Oncology Hospital) which is actually, brand new. There is an expat Medical Center called, Family Medical. You can use them and they organize evacuations for urgent care," remarked one expat living in Da Nang.

"Emergency services in Da Nang are available to assist in various situations, including medical emergencies, fires, and accidents. The services are provided by local hospitals, fire departments, and police stations. To call for an ambulance in Da Nang, you can dial the emergency hotline number, which is 115. It is essential to provide clear information about your location and the nature of the emergency to ensure prompt assistance. Keep in mind that language barriers may exist, so it is helpful to have a Vietnamese speaker nearby to help communicate if possible," said one expat living in Da Nang.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Yes, there are a good number of medical specialists in Da Nang. People in Da Nang can access a wide range of medical specialists, including general practitioners, specialists in internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, and more. For highly specialized medical care, people in Da Nang typically go to the Da Nang General Hospital, which is the largest hospital in the city and offers a wide range of medical services. The hospital also has a number of specialized departments, such as a cancer center, a heart center, and a neurology center. Additionally, there are a number of private hospitals and clinics in Da Nang that offer specialized medical care," wrote one expat.

"Perscription medicines are easily available here at the local pharmacies. I did not need a script for my thyroid condition," said one expat living in Da Nang.

"Common prescription medications are generally available in Da Nang. You can find them in local pharmacies, also known as "nhà thu?c," which are widely spread throughout the city. These pharmacies stock a variety of medications, including antibiotics, pain relievers, and medications for chronic conditions. However, it is essential to note that the availability of specific medications may vary, and some Western brands may not be available or may have different names. It is recommended to bring a copy of your prescription and consult with a local pharmacist to ensure you receive the correct medication. Additionally, it is a good idea to carry a sufficient supply of your prescription medications when traveling to Da Nang, as the quality and availability of medications may not be consistent with what you are used to in your home country," mentioned one expat in Da Nang.

"Medicine is available over the counter. I have a good pharmacy I go to but, you need to ask around about pharmacy's because, not all medicine is real or unexpired. I have for example, purchased ibuprofen that simply did not work," commented one expat who moved to Da Nang, Vietnam.
