"Playa Jaco offers a variety of healthcare services to its residents and visitors. The town has several private clinics and hospitals that provide general medical care, as well as specialized services such as dentistry, optometry, and dermatology. Additionally, there are several pharmacies in the area that offer prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies. For more serious medical issues, there are several medical evacuation services available to transport patients to larger cities for more advanced care," remarked one expat living in Playa Jaco.

What are medical services in Playa Jaco like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Playa Jaco, they replied:

"In addition to general practice physicians, dentistry services and physical well being facilities, the area offers specialized care physicians who attend to the area residents. Local general care physicians offer the use of their offices for this specialized service such as women's health care, cardiology, dermatology, advanced dentistry and internal medicine," wrote one expat.

"Playa Jaco offers a wide range of medical services for both locals and visitors. The town has several private clinics and hospitals that provide quality medical care, including general practice, emergency services, and specialized care. Additionally, there are several pharmacies in the area that offer prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies. For more serious medical issues, Playa Jaco is close to larger cities with more advanced medical facilities," commented one expat who moved to Playa Jaco.

The ambulance will be dispatched to your location as soon as possible. Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Yes, there are a number of medical specialists in Playa Jaco. These specialists include general practitioners, dentists, optometrists, and specialists in areas such as cardiology, orthopedics, and neurology. For highly specialized medical care, people typically go to larger cities such as San Jose or Alajuela, where there are larger hospitals and more specialized medical professionals," wrote one expat.

Are common prescription medications available in Playa Jaco?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Playa Jaco. Most pharmacies in the area carry a wide variety of medications, including those used to treat common ailments such as allergies, colds, and flu. Many pharmacies also offer generic versions of popular brand-name medications, which can be a more affordable option. Additionally, some pharmacies offer online ordering and delivery services, making it easier to get the medications you need," mentioned one expat in Playa Jaco.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Playa Jaco?

"Playa Jaco has a Red Cross station in addition to local public clinic. In the event of illness or injury, you will be treated at the local clinic and transportation to a higher level of medical care is provided. There are also many private physicians in the area which will provided specialized medical care. I have found the level of care to be excellent. The Central Valley is only 90 minutes by vehicle and this area of Costa Rica boasts the highest level of care in the country and in many cases Central America," remarked one expat living in Playa Jaco.

As a foreigner living in Playa Jaco, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Playa Jaco, you will have access to public healthcare. The public healthcare system in Costa Rica is generally considered to be of good quality, with a wide range of services available. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is free for all citizens and legal residents. The public healthcare system is also supplemented by private healthcare providers, which offer more specialized services," said an expat in Playa Jaco.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Playa Jaco if they have access to public healthcare in Playa Jaco. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"During the COVID 19 pandemic, prescriptions that needed to be filled by the local national care program (CAJA) were home delivered. At the present time, prescription refills are completed over the telephone. When picking up prescriptions at the local public healthcare facilities, there are strict guidelines to follow, a nurse and security is stationed at the entrance to the facility to ensure health guidelines are followed," said an expat in Playa Jaco.

"My experiences with the local healthcare system in Playa Jaco during the pandemic have been positive overall. The healthcare system has been very responsive to the needs of the community, providing timely and effective care to those who need it. The healthcare professionals have been very knowledgeable and helpful, providing clear and concise information about the virus and how to protect oneself. The government has also been proactive in providing resources to the community, such as free testing and access to medical supplies. Overall, the healthcare system in Playa Jaco has been well-prepared to handle the pandemic and has been a great source of support for the community," commented one expat living in Playa Jaco, Costa Rica.

What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Playa Jaco?

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Playa Jaco about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said:

"It is important to have an experienced midwife or obstetrician for labour and delivery that is familiar with the culture, language and customs of the area, and to be aware of the laws and regulations that pertain to having a baby in Costa Rica. It is also important to ensure that the necessary vaccinations are up to date, to research any recommended medications or supplements, and to know the availability of resources (such as hospitals and help-lines) that may be needed. The quality of care and the level of medical coverage should also be carefully evaluated prior to any medical procedure or birth. It is also advisable to plan for all unforeseen costs, to have a comprehensive health insurance for mother and baby, and to develop an emergency plan if any complications arise. Finally, it is important to prepare for the emotional and practical transitions of having a baby abroad, and to make sure to connect with other mums in the area to get support and advice," wrote a person living in Playa Jaco.

Are healthcare services good in Playa Jaco?

We asked people if they have access to good medical care in Playa Jaco. They wrote:

"Healthcare services in Playa Jaco are largely provided by local hospitals and clinics, as well as national hospitals and clinics located in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Private healthcare professionals are widely available in the Playa Jaco area, and the majority of medical facilities offer various services including primary care and specialty care, medical diagnostics, laboratory services, hospitalization, surgical treatments, and dental and cosmetic treatments. Quality services are provided while following stringent health and safety protocols. In addition, pharmacies, private health centers, and medical dispensaries are available in the area and provide a wide range of healthcare products, including over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, vitamins, and medical supplies," said one expat in Playa Jaco.

"The area has several local physicians which offer quality care. Additionally, specialized physicians in the area of dermatology, dental, obstetrics, psychology visit the area once a month from the Central Valley. Excellent medical care is available in the Central Valley 90 minutes from Hermosa and Jaco," remarked one in Playa Hermosa de Jaco.
