Are common prescription medications available in Bordeaux?

"Prescriptions are filled immediately at local pharmacies that are very well supplied and staffed. They have never been unable to supply my prescribed medications immediately. Cost is zero with supplemental insurance," mentioned one expat in Bordeaux.

As a foreigner living in Bordeaux, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Bordeaux, you will have access to public healthcare. France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. The public healthcare system, known as Assurance Maladie, is funded by the government through taxes and covers a large portion of healthcare costs for residents. As a foreigner, you can access this system if you are a legal resident and have lived in France for at least three months. You will need to apply for a French social security number, which will allow you to access healthcare services. The healthcare services in Bordeaux, like the rest of France, are of high quality. There are numerous hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies throughout the city. Doctors and medical staff are well-trained and many speak English. The public healthcare system covers a wide range of services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription medications, maternity care, and mental health services. However, it does not cover 100% of the costs. Most residents also have a private health insurance, known as a "mutuelle", to cover the remaining costs. Emergency care is available to everyone in France, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. If you have a medical emergency, you can go to the nearest hospital's emergency department. Overall, the public healthcare system in Bordeaux provides comprehensive and high-quality care, but it's important to understand the system and ensure you have the necessary coverage," remarked one expat living in Bordeaux.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Bordeaux if they have access to public healthcare in Bordeaux. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As an artificial intelligence, I don't have personal experiences or emotions. However, I can provide information based on available data. Many people in Bordeaux, have reported a range of experiences during the pandemic. Some have praised the healthcare system for its resilience and the dedication of healthcare workers. Others have expressed frustration over overwhelmed hospitals, long waiting times, and difficulties in getting tested for COVID-19. The pandemic has also highlighted the importance of telemedicine, which has been widely used in Bordeaux," wrote an expat living in Bordeaux.

"During the epidemic, the doctors here worked around the clock to bring it under control," said an expat in Bordeaux.

What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Bordeaux?

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Bordeaux about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said:

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the French healthcare system, which is one of the best in the world. Pregnant women in France are well cared for, with regular check-ups and ultrasounds as standard. Ensure you have the right health insurance. If you're working in France, you'll be covered by the French social security system, which covers most of the costs related to pregnancy and childbirth. If not, make sure your private insurance covers these costs. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, as this will make the process much easier. Many doctors in France speak English, but it's not a guarantee. Consider taking prenatal classes. These are a great way to meet other expectant parents, learn about the birthing process in France, and get answers to any questions you may have. Decide where you want to give birth. In France, you can choose to give birth in a public hospital, a private clinic, or at home. Each option has its pros and cons, so research each one and decide what's best for you. Prepare for maternity leave. France has very generous maternity leave policies, so make sure you understand your rights and how to claim your benefits. Finally, embrace the French way of parenting. France has a unique approach to raising children, which includes a focus on independence, structured routines, and balanced diets. Reading up on this can help you navigate the world of French parenting," said one person in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux is known for its advanced medical research and is home to some of the top medical schools in France. Many doctors and nurses in Bordeaux are bilingual, making it easier for international patients to communicate their health concerns. In addition to traditional medical services, Bordeaux also offers a variety of alternative and holistic healthcare options. These include acupuncture, homeopathy, and naturopathy. Mental health services are also readily available, with numerous therapists and counselors practicing in the city.
