What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"As exciting as retiring abroad is, it is important to stay realistic and do thorough research to make sure your goals can be met in your desired location. Understanding the cost of living, medical and insurance requirements, as well as any expat limitations are key steps. Be sure to explore the area to get an understanding of the culture and language spoken, or even see if any expat groups or meetups exist in the area. Don't forget to check for any visa or working restrictions; understanding tax implications is crucial too. And finally, don't forget the little things. Research home amenities, transportation, and availability of items you may need from back home. It's important to reflect on the reasons why you are making the move and prepare for potential problems that may arise. Familiarise yourself with safety protocols, know your rights as an expat, and always be ready and willing to adapt to the new culture," said a retiree who moved to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Colombo?

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Colombo is the cost of living. The city is known for its high cost of living, which can be difficult for retirees on a fixed income. Additionally, the city is prone to extreme weather conditions, such as monsoons and cyclones, which can make it difficult to live in the city comfortably. Furthermore, the city is known for its high levels of air pollution, which can be a health hazard for retirees. Finally, the city is known for its high crime rate, which can be a concern for retirees who are looking for a safe place to live," commented one retiree living in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
