What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"Research, live there for at least six months, do not purchase property, and be wary of hype which almost always comes from real estate oriented promoters etc. Learn enough of the language to show the locals that you're trying, and don't be afraid to use it. They'll be very appreciative," remarked one retiree in Boquete.

"Retirees in Boquete advise others considering retiring abroad to research the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of healthcare and other services. They also suggest getting to know the local culture and customs, as well as learning some of the language, to make the transition smoother. Additionally, they recommend visiting the area multiple times before making a final decision, to ensure that it is the right fit for you. Finally, they suggest taking advantage of the many outdoor activities and natural beauty that Boquete has to offer," said a retiree who moved to Boquete, Panama.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Boquete?

"Getting used to the cultural differences, language, pace of life and casual attitude about service," remarked one retiree in Boquete.

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Boquete is the language barrier. Although many people in Boquete speak English, Spanish is the primary language and it can be difficult to communicate with locals if you don't speak the language. Additionally, the cost of living in Boquete is higher than in other parts of Panama, making it difficult to stretch a retirement budget. Finally, the climate in Boquete can be unpredictable, with frequent rain and occasional flooding, making it difficult to plan outdoor activities," said a retiree who moved to Boquete, Panama.

What do I need to know before retiring in Boquete?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Boquete, they said:

"Expats considering retiring in Boquete should be aware that the cost of living is relatively low compared to other countries, but it is still important to budget carefully. Boquete is a small town, so it is important to research the local amenities and services available before making the move. The climate in Boquete is generally mild and pleasant, but it is important to be aware of the rainy season and the potential for flooding. Additionally, it is important to research the local healthcare system and the availability of medical services in the area. Finally, it is important to research the local laws and regulations regarding residency and visas," said a retiree who moved to Boquete, Panama.

"Be prepared to change your life. Leave behind all your pre concieved notions of how it should be, what you need, want, and must have to get by. EVERYTHING is different, embrace it, learn from it, apply what you can to your life but don't come here with demands, strict ideals, uptight lifestyle, and the idea that you are going to save a third world culture from itself. I find the opposite is what happens, it saves you from yourself and what ever madness you left behind," said one retiree in Boquete.
