Is the cost of living in Venice high?

We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in Venice, they wrote:

"Living in Venice, is generally considered to be quite expensive. The cost of housing is high, especially in the more desirable areas of the city. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can be quite costly, while outside the city center, it can be somewhat less expensive. The cost of groceries and dining out is also high in Venice. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant can be pricey, and a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant can be even more expensive. Groceries are also more expensive than in many other parts of Italy, with basic items such as bread, milk, and eggs costing more than average. Transportation costs can also add up, especially if you frequently use the city's iconic gondolas or water taxis. Public transportation, such as the vaporetto (water bus), is less expensive but still costs more than public transportation in many other cities. Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage, are also quite expensive in Venice. Internet and mobile services are comparatively cheaper but still higher than in many other European cities. Overall, the cost of living in Venice is high compared to many other cities in Italy and Europe. Despite this, many people are drawn to the city's unique charm, rich history, and vibrant culture," said one expat in Venice.

Will I save money living in Venice?

"The cost of living in Venice, can vary greatly depending on your lifestyle, but generally, it is considered to be higher than in many parts of the United States. Housing, in particular, can be quite expensive in Venice due to the city's historical significance and tourist appeal. Groceries and dining out can also be more costly in Venice compared to the average prices in the U.S. However, healthcare and education costs are typically lower in Italy than in the U.S. Therefore, whether you would save money or not depends on your personal spending habits and lifestyle choices," wrote a person living in Venice.

What is the average cost of housing in Venice?

If you are thinking about moving to Venice, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Venice can vary greatly depending on the location and size of the property. As of recent data, a property in the city center can cost around 4,000 to 7,000 Euros per square meter. However, in less central areas, the price can drop to around 2,500 to 3,500 Euros per square meter. For rental properties, a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can cost around 700 to 1,200 Euros per month, while the same outside the city center can cost approximately 500 to 800 Euros per month. Please note that these prices are subject to change and can fluctuate based on the real estate market," said one person in Venice.
