"Living in Kyoto can be considered moderately expensive, especially when compared to other major cities in the world. The cost of housing in Kyoto is relatively high, with rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center being quite costly. Outside the city center, the rent decreases significantly but is still considerable. The cost of food in Kyoto can vary greatly depending on where you choose to eat. Eating out at restaurants can be quite expensive, especially at high-end establishments. However, there are also many affordable options such as street food and local markets where you can buy fresh produce and groceries at a lower cost. Transportation costs in Kyoto are also a significant part of the cost of living. Public transportation, such as buses and trains, is widely used and can be quite affordable. However, owning and maintaining a car can be quite expensive due to the cost of petrol, parking, and maintenance. Utilities such as electricity, heating, cooling, and internet are also a significant part of the cost of living in Kyoto. These costs can vary depending on the size of your apartment and your usage. Healthcare in Kyoto is of a high standard, but it can also be quite expensive. However, Japan has a universal healthcare system, so residents are required to have health insurance, which can help offset these costs. Overall, while the cost of living in Kyoto can be high, it is also a city with a high standard of living, offering residents access to excellent healthcare, education, and cultural experiences," explained one expat.

Will I save money living in Kyoto?
"The cost of living in Kyoto, can be lower than in many cities in the United States, especially when it comes to rent and public transportation. However, this largely depends on your lifestyle and spending habits. For instance, eating out at restaurants or buying imported goods can be more expensive in Kyoto. Health care is generally cheaper in Japan, and the country has a high standard of living. Utilities and groceries can be comparable or slightly higher than in the U.S. Therefore, whether or not you save money living in Kyoto compared to the United States will depend on your personal lifestyle choices and spending habits," remarked one in Kyoto.
What is the average cost of housing in Kyoto?
If you are thinking about moving to Kyoto, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:
"The average cost of housing in Kyoto can vary greatly depending on the location and size of the property. For a one-bedroom apartment in the city center, the monthly rent is typically around 80,000 to 100,000 Japanese yen. If you're looking outside of the city center, the rent for a similar apartment can drop to approximately 50,000 to 70,000 yen per month. For larger apartments or houses suitable for families, the rental cost can range from 150,000 to 200,000 yen per month. If you're looking to buy property, the average price per square meter in the city center is around 500,000 to 700,000 yen, while outside the city center it can be around 300,000 to 500,000 yen. However, these prices can fluctuate based on market conditions and other factors," said one expat in Kyoto.
