A nice one bedroom apartment in Amsterdam can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 per month, while a nice two bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $3,500 per month. The cost of dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in Amsterdam can range from $15 to $30 per person.

"The cost of living in Amsterdam is generally considered to be high, with prices for basic necessities such as food, housing, and transportation being significantly higher than in other parts of the Netherlands. Renting an apartment in the city center can be expensive, and the cost of groceries is also higher than in other parts of the country. Public transportation is relatively affordable, however, and there are plenty of cultural activities and attractions that are free or low-cost," remarked one in Amsterdam.

Will I save money living in Amsterdam?

"Living in Amsterdam can be more affordable than living in the United States. The cost of living in Amsterdam is generally lower than in the US, with rent and groceries being particularly cheaper. Additionally, public transportation is widely available and affordable, making it easier to get around without a car. Healthcare is also more affordable in Amsterdam, with the government providing free basic healthcare to all residents. Overall, living in Amsterdam can be a more cost-effective option than living in the US," said one expat in Amsterdam.

What is the average cost of housing in Amsterdam?

If you are thinking about moving to Amsterdam, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"My housing costs are much higher. I pay around 1800 each month now agains around 800 US in Austin," explained one expat.

"The cost of housing in Amsterdam is generally quite high. Rent prices for apartments in the city center can range from €1,000 to €2,500 per month, while rent prices for apartments in the suburbs can range from €700 to €1,500 per month. Additionally, the cost of buying a house in Amsterdam is quite high, with prices ranging from €400,000 to €1,000,000," said one person in Amsterdam.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Amsterdam what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in Amsterdam typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer. Additionally, some properties may include a microwave, toaster, and other small kitchen appliances," wrote one expat.
