An expat should search for a home to buy in Bangkok by researching the different neighborhoods and areas, looking at listings online, and visiting the properties in person. The most desirable neighborhoods in Bangkok include Sukhumvit, Sathorn, and Silom. These areas are known for their modern amenities, convenient transportation, and vibrant nightlife.

How do I find a place to live in Bangkok?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"When looking for a place to live in Bangkok, it is important to consider your budget, location, and amenities. Start by researching different neighborhoods in Bangkok to find one that fits your needs. Consider the proximity to public transportation, restaurants, and other amenities. Once you have narrowed down your search, you can look for apartments or houses for rent on websites such as Craigslist, Expat.com, or Bangkok.com. Additionally, you can contact a real estate agent to help you find a place that meets your needs," said one expat in Bangkok.

"I did lots of online searching and I found a pretty helpful website; www.roommillion.com and www.click4apartment.com - you can check it out. I had experienced inspection property with RoomMillion's staffs, they are so friendly and professional," remarked one member in Bangkok.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Bangkok?

"Expat homes and apartments in Bangkok are typically modern and luxurious, with high-end amenities such as air conditioning, swimming pools, and fitness centers. Many expat homes and apartments also feature balconies with stunning views of the city skyline. Expat homes and apartments in Bangkok are typically located in the city center, close to shopping, dining, and entertainment options," said one expat who made the move to Bangkok.

"Once I arrived Bangkok, my company reserved a serviced apartment in Silom (cannot remember the name). And I signed contract 1 year after that in Condominium which is cheaper, RoomMillion can arrange the maid cleaning for you if you want," explained one foreigner living in Bangkok, Thailand.

What is the average cost of housing in Bangkok?

If you are thinking about moving to Bangkok, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"Housing costs are higher here, but we live very close to the city so I guess if we were living that close to the city at home it might be the same. Some apartments charge more than the normal rate for electricity and water and with air conditioning on it can start to get expensive. The Orientations guy told us about that and found us a place that does not charge extra," said one expat who made the move to Bangkok.

"The average cost of housing in Bangkok is generally quite high, with prices ranging from mid-range to luxury. Renting an apartment in the city center can be expensive, while more affordable options can be found in the suburbs," explained one foreigner living in Bangkok, Thailand.

Should I buy or rent a home in Bangkok?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Bangkok, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Bangkok can be a great investment, as the city is a popular destination for tourists and expats alike. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in Bangkok, as well as the cost of purchasing a home, before making a decision. Renting a home in Bangkok can be a great option for those who are not ready to commit to buying a home, as it allows for more flexibility and can be more cost-effective in the short-term. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Bangkok should be based on individual needs and preferences," said one expat who made the move to Bangkok.

What do I need to know when buying property in Bangkok?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Bangkok, they said:

"1. It is important to research the area you are looking to buy in, as different areas have different regulations and taxes. 2. Make sure to hire a reputable lawyer to help you with the legal aspects of the purchase. 3. Be aware of the different types of property ownership available in Thailand, such as freehold, leasehold, and usufruct. 4. Consider the costs associated with buying property in Bangkok, such as transfer fees, taxes, and other fees. 5. Make sure to get a survey of the property to ensure that it is in good condition and that there are no hidden problems. 6. Be aware of the different types of mortgages available in Thailand, such as fixed-rate and variable-rate mortgages. 7. Consider the long-term implications of buying property in Bangkok, such as maintenance costs and potential rental income," said one in Bangkok.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Bangkok?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Bangkok, they said...

"Foreigners are allowed to own property in Bangkok, but there are certain restrictions and conditions they must follow. Foreign nationals can own a condominium unit in their name, as long as the total foreign ownership in the building does not exceed 49%. However, they cannot directly own land or a house in Thailand. To purchase land or a house, a foreigner can either set up a Thai limited company, which they can own up to 49% of, or enter into a long-term lease agreement with a Thai landowner. It is essential for foreigners to consult with a local lawyer or property expert to ensure they follow the proper legal procedures when purchasing property in Bangkok," said one person in Bangkok.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Bangkok what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in Bangkok typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, washing machine, and air conditioning unit. Some properties may also include a microwave, dishwasher, and water heater," explained one expat in Bangkok.

Additionally, expats may work with local real estate agents who are familiar with the city and can help them navigate the rental or buying process. Visiting different neighborhoods and attending open houses or property viewings can also be helpful in finding the right home. Finally, expats may consider factors such as proximity to public transportation, international schools, and amenities when searching for a home in Bangkok," explained one person living in Bangkok, Thailand.
