How do I find a place to live in Kefalonia?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Kefalonia, involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a large villa. Next, you should research the different areas of Kefalonia to decide where you'd like to live. Some popular areas include Argostoli, the island's capital, and the coastal towns of Lixouri and Fiskardo. Each area has its own unique charm and amenities, so it's important to choose a location that suits your lifestyle and needs. Once you've decided on a location, you can start searching for available properties. There are several online real estate platforms that list properties for rent or sale in Kefalonia, such as Spitogatos, XE, and HomeGreekHome. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, property type, price, and other criteria. In addition to online searches, you might also want to consider hiring a local real estate agent. They can provide valuable insight into the local market, help you negotiate prices, and guide you through the legal process of renting or buying a property in Greece. When you find a property you're interested in, it's important to visit it in person before making a decision. This will give you a chance to inspect the property's condition, check out the neighborhood, and see if it truly meets your needs. Finally, once you've found your ideal home, you'll need to sign a lease or purchase agreement. This should be done with the assistance of a lawyer to ensure that all legal requirements are met and that your rights are protected. Remember, moving to a new country can be a complex process, so it's important to take your time, do your research, and seek professional advice when necessary," explained one person living in Kefalonia, Greece.

Should I buy or rent a home in Kefalonia?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Kefalonia, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Kefalonia depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in Kefalonia for an extended period and have the financial means, buying a home can be a good investment, as property prices in Greece have been relatively low in recent years. Owning a home also allows you to have more control over your living space and potentially generate rental income if you decide to rent it out when you're not using it. On the other hand, renting a home in Kefalonia offers more flexibility, as you can easily move to a different location or property if your needs or preferences change. Renting can also be more cost-effective in the short term, as you won't need to pay for property taxes, maintenance, and other expenses associated with homeownership. Additionally, renting allows you to test out living in Kefalonia before committing to a long-term investment. Ultimately, the choice between buying and renting a home in Kefalonia depends on your individual needs, financial situation, and future plans. It's essential to carefully consider your options and consult with a local real estate expert to make the best decision for your circumstances," said one person in Kefalonia.
