How do I find a place to live in Esztergom?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Esztergom involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a larger family home. Next, you should start your search online. There are several websites that list properties for rent or sale in Hungary, such as ingatlan.com, or otthonterkep.hu. These websites allow you to filter by location, price, size, and other features. You can also find listings in local newspapers or real estate agencies in Esztergom. Once you've found some potential places, contact the landlord or real estate agent to arrange a viewing. It's important to see the place in person before making any decisions. During the viewing, check the condition of the property, ask about any additional costs such as utilities or maintenance fees, and get a feel for the neighborhood. If you're moving from abroad, you might want to consider hiring a relocation service or a local real estate agent who can help you navigate the process. They can assist with language barriers, legal paperwork, and other challenges. After you've found a place you like, you'll need to negotiate the lease or purchase agreement. Make sure to read the contract carefully and understand all the terms before signing. If you're not fluent in Hungarian, it's a good idea to have a lawyer or real estate professional review the contract. Finally, once the contract is signed, you'll need to register your new address with the local authorities. This is usually done at the local government office, known as the "polgármesteri hivatal" in Hungarian. Remember, finding a place to live can take time, so start your search well in advance of your planned move date," said one person in Esztergom.

Should I buy or rent a home in Esztergom?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Esztergom, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Esztergom, depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in Esztergom for an extended period and have the financial means to purchase a property, buying a home can be a good investment. Owning a home allows you to build equity, customize your living space, and potentially benefit from property appreciation over time. On the other hand, if you are unsure about your long-term plans or prefer flexibility, renting a home may be a better option. Renting allows you to move more easily if your circumstances change, and it typically requires less upfront capital and financial commitment. Additionally, renting a home means you are not responsible for property maintenance and repairs, which can save you time and money. It is essential to carefully consider your financial situation, lifestyle preferences, and long-term goals before deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Esztergom. Consulting with a local real estate agent or financial advisor can also provide valuable insights and guidance in making this decision," explained one person living in Esztergom, Hungary.
