Additionally, you can also search for local real estate agents who specialize in the area and can help you find the perfect place to live. What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Bocas del Toro?

"We live in a spacious one bedroom apartment across from the ocean for $400 a month. There are people who live in smaller cheaper places more inland and folks who live out on the water in larger homes for more money. Typical is what fits you," said one person in Bocas del Toro.

"Expat homes and apartments in Bocas del Toro are typically bright and airy, with large windows and balconies that offer stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Many of the homes and apartments are located in beachfront communities, providing easy access to the white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The interiors are often decorated with a mix of modern and traditional furnishings, and feature air conditioning, high-speed internet, and other modern amenities. Expats in Bocas del Toro can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Bocas del Toro.

What is the average cost of housing in Bocas del Toro?

If you are thinking about moving to Bocas del Toro, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Bocas del Toro varies depending on the type of accommodation and location. Generally, the cost of renting an apartment or house in Bocas del Toro is relatively affordable compared to other cities in Panama. Prices range from around $200 to $1,000 per month, depending on the size and amenities of the property," said one person in Bocas del Toro.

"Our housing costs are about a third of what we spend in the US. You can get a nice simple apartment for 300 and up or a home for 500 and up. We live on an island so you are never far from the ocean,," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Bocas del Toro.

Should I buy or rent a home in Bocas del Toro?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Bocas del Toro, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Bocas del Toro can be a great investment. The area is known for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, and vibrant culture. Renting a home in Bocas del Toro can also be a great option, as it allows you to experience the area without the commitment of buying a home. Depending on your budget and lifestyle, either option can be a great choice," said one person in Bocas del Toro.

"Renting a place is easy. Contrary to the US the property owner has the rights of ownership while the renter is more obligated to be responsible. Purchasing property is fairly straight forward, there are real estate professionals who can help. It will be necessary to have a lawyer draw up the purchase agreements and get the proper government documents recorded. Keep good records because the Panamanians won't. A good lawyer will be diligent in the purchase or title process and is a must. We purchased several acres on Isla Solarte and built our home. I was a general contractor by trade so it was easier for me. Logistics is the only real issue. Getting your materials to the job site in a timely manner, having the necessary materials to keep the job moving along. Some materials, especially finish goods, must be obtained in the city of David and brought to Bocas (about 4 hours away) Transportation is readily available and reliable. The best advice is to talk to others who have completed what you are attempting to do. Enlist the help of someone who has been thru the process. You will make far fewer mistakes??," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Bocas del Toro.

What do I need to know when buying property in Bocas del Toro?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Bocas del Toro, they said:

"1. It is important to research the area you are interested in buying property in, to ensure it is a safe and desirable location. 2. Make sure to hire a reputable lawyer to help you with the legal aspects of the purchase. 3. Be aware of the local laws and regulations regarding property ownership and taxes. 4. Consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of amenities such as schools, hospitals, and transportation. 5. Make sure to inspect the property thoroughly before making a purchase, to ensure it is in good condition and meets your needs. 6. Be aware of any restrictions or limitations that may be placed on the property, such as zoning regulations or environmental restrictions. 7. Consider the potential for rental income if you are looking to purchase an investment property. 8. Be aware of the local real estate market, to ensure you are getting a fair price for the property," said one person in Bocas del Toro.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Bocas del Toro?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Bocas del Toro, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Bocas del Toro. The Panamanian government has established a program called the "Friendly Nations Visa" which allows foreign citizens to purchase property in Panama. This program grants foreign citizens the same rights as Panamanian citizens when it comes to owning property, including the right to buy, sell, and rent property. Additionally, foreign citizens are not subject to any restrictions on the amount of property they can own," said one foreigner living in Bocas del Toro, Panama.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Bocas del Toro what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in Bocas del Toro typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, and washing machine. Depending on the property, some may also include a dishwasher, microwave, and air conditioning," wrote one expat who made the move to Bocas del Toro.
