What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Alicante?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Alicante about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Spanish healthcare system. Spain has a high standard of healthcare and many hospitals in Alicante have excellent maternity units. However, not all staff may speak English, so it might be beneficial to learn some basic Spanish medical terms or consider hiring a translator. Secondly, ensure that you have the correct paperwork. This includes your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you're from an EU country, or proof of private health insurance if you're from outside the EU. You'll also need to register the birth at the local registry office and apply for a NIE (foreigner's identification number) for your baby. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and advice throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any language barriers and cultural differences. Fourthly, be aware that Spanish maternity leave is quite generous, with 16 weeks paid leave for mothers and a recent extension to 8 weeks for fathers. However, if you're self-employed or run your own business, you'll need to check what you're entitled to. Lastly, take the time to understand and respect Spanish customs and traditions around childbirth. For example, it's common for the whole family to visit the hospital after the baby is born, and children are generally included in all aspects of life, often staying up as late as their parents. Remember, every pregnancy and birth is unique, so what works for one person might not work for another. It's important to do your own research and make the decisions that are right for you and your family," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Alicante, Spain.
