What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Malaga?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Malaga about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Spanish healthcare system. Spain has a high standard of healthcare and many hospitals in Malaga have excellent maternity units. However, not all staff may speak English, so it might be beneficial to learn some basic Spanish medical terms or consider hiring a translator. Secondly, ensure that you have the correct paperwork. This includes your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you're from an EU country, or proof of private health insurance. You will also need to register the birth at the local registry office and apply for a NIE (foreigner's identification number) for your baby. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and advice throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any language barriers and cultural differences. Fourthly, be aware that Spanish culture may have different customs and expectations around pregnancy and childbirth. For example, Spanish hospitals typically encourage natural childbirth and may not offer epidurals as standard. Lastly, take advantage of local support networks. There are many expat groups in Malaga and wider Spain, which can provide advice and companionship. This can be particularly helpful if you're far from family and friends," commented one expat who made the move to Malaga, Spain.
