What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Zurich?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Zurich about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"If my friend was native English speaker like me I would tell her not to worry about the language barrier. Most of the doctors, nurses, midwives, etc... speak English and in the cases that they don't speak English you quickly realize that you can still communicate through other means. The best advice is to try to relax and to just enjoy it," commented one expat who made the move to Zurich, Switzerland.

"Being an expat having a baby in Zurich can be both exciting and daunting. It’s important to know that healthcare in Switzerland is of a very high quality, with excellent antenatal and postnatal care. Before having your baby, you should meet with a doctor and enquire about availability of prenatal classes, birthing options and childbirth preparation classes. It is helpful to register with a doctor quickly, even if you are not yet pregnant. In Zurich, there is a free midwife service that helps support new mothers and can provide advice on breastfeeding. Additionally, it is important to do some research into whether there are any parental leave schemes, childcare options, and costs associated with having a baby in Zurich. Making connections with other parents in the city can be extremely helpful, providing a network for support and for asking any questions. Finally, it is important to have realistic expectations and allow yourself time to adjust to the new situation," remarked another expat in Zurich, Switzerland.
