What advice do you have for expats having a baby in San Fernando?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in San Fernando about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Trinidad & Tobago. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the public system being free for all residents. However, many expats choose private healthcare for more personalized care and shorter waiting times. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period before you can claim for maternity costs, so plan ahead. Find a good obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. Ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. San Fernando General Hospital is one of the major hospitals in the city. Consider hiring a doula or midwife for additional support during pregnancy and childbirth. They can provide emotional support, help with pain management, and assist with breastfeeding. Take advantage of prenatal classes. They can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and are also a great way to meet other expectant parents. If you're planning to work while pregnant, understand your rights. Trinidad & Tobago has laws in place to protect pregnant women in the workplace, including maternity leave. Ensure your newborn's paperwork is in order. This includes registering the birth and applying for a passport if you plan to travel with your baby. The process can be complex, so it's worth seeking advice from a legal professional or your embassy. Finally, embrace the local culture and community. Trinidad & Tobago is known for its friendly people and vibrant culture. Join local parent groups, participate in community events, and make the most of your time in this beautiful country," said a member in San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago.
