What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Chaguanas?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Chaguanas about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Trinidad and Tobago. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the public system being free for all residents. However, many expats choose to use private healthcare due to shorter waiting times and often higher standards of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period before you can claim for maternity care, so plan ahead. Find a good obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. Ask for recommendations from other expats or locals, or do your own research online. Visit the hospital beforehand to ensure you're comfortable with the facilities. Understand the local customs and practices around childbirth. In Trinidad and Tobago, it's common for the father to be present at the birth, and for the baby to stay in the same room as the mother after the birth. Consider hiring a doula or midwife for additional support during your pregnancy and birth. They can provide emotional support, help with pain management, and advocate for your wishes during labor and delivery. If you're planning to give birth in a public hospital, be aware that you may need to bring your own supplies such as diapers, wipes, and baby clothes. Check with the hospital beforehand to find out what they provide and what you need to bring. Finally, make sure you understand the process for registering the birth and getting a birth certificate for your baby. This is important for establishing your baby's citizenship and for future travel," remarked another expat in Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago.
