What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Isle of Arran?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Isle of Arran about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Scotland. The National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare, including maternity services, to all UK residents. As an expat, ensure you are eligible for these services. Secondly, the Isle of Arran is a small island with limited medical facilities. For regular check-ups and minor issues, the Arran War Memorial Hospital in Lamlash can be used. However, for childbirth, you may need to travel to the mainland as the hospital on the island does not have a maternity unit. Thirdly, plan your travel arrangements well in advance. The island is accessible by ferry, so consider the ferry schedule and weather conditions, especially as your due date approaches. It might be a good idea to plan to stay on the mainland as your due date approaches to avoid any last-minute rush. Fourthly, consider hiring a midwife or doula who can provide personalized care and support throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. They can also help you navigate the healthcare system and make necessary arrangements. Fifthly, connect with other expat parents or local parents' groups. They can provide valuable advice, support, and information about having a baby in Scotland. Lastly, ensure you have all necessary documents for your baby, such as a birth certificate and passport. The process to obtain these might be different than in your home country, so research this in advance," remarked another expat who made the move to Isle of Arran, Scotland.
