What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Shetland Islands?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Shetland Islands about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Scotland. The National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare, including maternity services, to all UK residents. As an expat, ensure you are eligible for these services. Secondly, understand that the Shetland Islands are remote, and while they have a hospital (Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick), it may not offer the same range of services as larger hospitals on the mainland. For complicated pregnancies or births, you may need to travel to mainland Scotland. Thirdly, consider hiring a midwife or doula. They can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. The NHS in Scotland supports both midwife-led and consultant-led care. Fourthly, be prepared for the weather. The Shetland Islands can be cold and windy, especially in winter. Make sure you have appropriate clothing for your baby. Fifthly, connect with other parents and expats. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend local resources such as baby groups or childcare services. Lastly, enjoy the unique experience of having a baby in the Shetland Islands. The islands have a strong sense of community, beautiful landscapes, and a slower pace of life that can be ideal for raising a child," commented one expat who made the move to Shetland Islands, Scotland.
