What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Aberdeen?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Aberdeen about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to register with a local GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you arrive in Aberdeen, as they will be your primary point of contact for all healthcare needs, including prenatal and postnatal care. Scotland's healthcare system, the NHS, provides free maternity care, so make sure you understand how to access these services. You should also familiarize yourself with the local hospitals and maternity units. Aberdeen Maternity Hospital is the main facility for childbirth in the city. Consider attending prenatal classes, which are often offered by hospitals or community centres. These can provide valuable information and support, as well as an opportunity to meet other expectant parents. If English is not your first language, you may want to find a translator or an advocate who can help you communicate with healthcare providers. Scotland has a strong tradition of breastfeeding, and there is plenty of support available if you choose to breastfeed your baby. Remember to register the birth of your baby within 21 days. This can be done at any registration office in Scotland, not just in the city where your baby was born. Finally, try to connect with other expat families in Aberdeen. They can provide advice, support, and friendship, which can be especially valuable when you're far from home and adjusting to life with a new baby," said a member in Aberdeen, Scotland.
