What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Inverness?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Inverness about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to register with a local GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you arrive in Inverness, as they will be your primary point of contact for all healthcare needs, including prenatal and postnatal care. Scotland's healthcare system, the NHS, provides free healthcare to all residents, including expats. This includes all prenatal check-ups, the birth itself, and postnatal care. You should also familiarize yourself with the local hospitals and maternity units. In Inverness, the main hospital is Raigmore Hospital, which has a maternity unit. Consider attending antenatal classes, which are a great way to prepare for the birth and to meet other expectant parents. These are often run by local health centres or charities. If you're planning to work while pregnant, be aware of your rights. In the UK, pregnant employees have the right to paid time off for antenatal care and may be eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance. You may also want to look into local childcare options for after the baby is born. In Scotland, all 3 and 4-year-olds, and some 2-year-olds, are entitled to 600 hours of free early learning and childcare per year. Finally, try to connect with other expat parents in the area. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend local resources or services," explained one expat living in Inverness, Scotland.
